SUPERVALU Receives GreenChill Award for Aggressive Reduction in Refrigerant Emissions By Betsy Kraat

EDEN PRAIRIE, MN--SUPERVALU Inc.received the Environmental Protection Agency?s (EPA) Superior Goal Achievement Award for its success in reducing refrigerant emissions across the company in 2010.

SUPERVALU, a member of the EPA?s GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership, has achieved its voluntary refrigerant emissions reduction goal every year since joining GreenChill.

?As a GreenChill partner, SUPERVALU is committed to aggressively reducing our emissions and we are proud to receive this reward recognizing those efforts,? said Andy Herring, executive vice president, real estate, market development and legal. ?Sustainability is key to SUPERVALU?s mission as a socially responsible company, and we look forward to building on this achievement as we continue these efforts in the future.?

This marks the third consecutive year SUPERVALU has received a GreenChill award for reducing refrigerant emissions. Representatives from SUPERVALU?s sustainability and real estate teams are officially accepting this award at the Food Marketing Institute?s Energy & Store Development Conference in Atlanta today.

?SUPERVALU sought out every opportunity to stop refrigerant leaks and achieve their ambitious voluntary emissions reduction goals,? said Keilly Witman, GreenChill Partnership manager. ?The company should be very proud of their hard work and their customers can feel proud that their supermarkets take environmental protection seriously.?

In 2010, SUPERVALU earned GreenChill?s Supermarket Distinguished Partner of the Year Award, as well as an award for refrigeration innovation for the design of its groundbreaking Chestnut Hill Star Market store. In fact, in 2009 this store became the second in the nation to receive GreenChill?s Platinum-Level Store Certification Award, the highest award the EPA has for supermarket refrigeration. A platinum certified store prevents 95% of the refrigerant emissions of a typical store, and the Chestnut Hill store is one of just three stores nationwide to ever attain this distinction. There are over 36,000 supermarkets in the nation.
