Removing Closed RPs

Hi there!
I have several roleplays that have been closed, however they still appear in the 'Roleplay - My Roleplays' tab.
I don't mind having them under my profile, but I wanted to know if there was a way to delete these from the tab so that I only have my active roleplays?

Crash kills Texas A&M freshman lineman, Utah teen

Texas A&M said Tuesday that redshirt freshman Polo Manukainiu and a friend who was joining the Utah football team this fall were among three people killed in a single-car rollover crash in the high desert of northern New Mexico, stunning both schools just days before fall practices begin.

Manukainiu, a 19-year-old defensive lineman for the Aggies, and 18-year-old Utah recruit Gaius "Keio" Vaenuku were killed, officials from both schools said.

The wreck happened Monday evening on U.S. 550 near Cuba, about 85 miles north of Albuquerque, apparently as the group was returning to suburban Dallas, where three of them had ties to prep football power Trinity High School in Euless.

New Mexico state police said Manukainiu and Vaenuku were passengers in a southbound 2002 Toyota Sequoia that drifted off the sagebrush-lined highway, according to Texas A&M. The driver overcorrected and the vehicle rolled several times.

Alcohol wasn't involved and it appeared that the driver, who was not immediately identified, was the only one wearing a seatbelt, authorities said.

Manukainiu and passenger Andrew "Lolo" Uhatafe died at the scene after they were ejected from the vehicle, the Texas A&M statement said. Vaenuku was pronounced dead in an ambulance that responded to the accident.

Survivors included Salesi Uhatafe and his son Salesi Uhatafe Jr., an incoming freshman football player for Utah and a stepbrother of Manukainiu. Both suffered only minor injuries, authorities said.

Manukainiu had apparently traveled to Salt Lake City for some relaxation, tweeting Sunday: "It's always good to get away from the Texas Heat for the weekend. Utah got that breezeeeeeee."

On Monday, hours before the accident, he tweeted: "22 hour drive back to Texas on no sleep. Oh my."

Manukainiu played football at Trinity High School in Euless, west of Dallas, and was part of the Aggies' 2012 signing class. He was a recreation, parks and tourism science major, the school said, and is survived by his mother, Lima Uhatafe of Euless.

"We lost a terrific young man," Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin said. "Polo was loved by his teammates and coaches. Anyone who came in contact with him was struck by his sense of humor and smile. My heart aches for his mom and family members."

Texas A&M finished last season ranked No. 5 after an 11-2 season, their first in the Southeastern Conference. They were led by quarterback Johnny Manziel, who became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy, and are expected to be highly ranked again this year.

"Heart hurts waking up to news about Polo," Manziel tweeted on Tuesday. "I think I speak for everyone on our team when I say we love you brother you will be missed."

It is the second such tragedy for Texas A&M in less than two years: Senior offensive lineman Joseph Villavisencio, 22, was killed in a December 2011 car accident after veering head-on into the path of an 18-wheeler 40 miles from College Station. He had spent part of that day delivering gifts to families at a local shelter. Manziel mentioned Villavisencio during his Heisman acceptance speech last year.

Vaenuku was a defensive tackle who had planned to play one year at Utah before going on a two-year Mormon mission, the Deseret News of Salt Lake City reported in January when he committed.

"Everyone who knew Gaius is heartbroken today," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said. "He was the kind of young man who lit up a room and his future in football and life had no boundaries. Words cannot express our devastation over the loss of Gaius."

Vaenuku was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and considered playing at church-owned Brigham Young but he said he felt more at home in Salt Lake City playing for the Utes. His bio on the Utah website says Vaenuku he had three brothers and three sisters and enjoyed acting and singing.

The news stunned Trinity High in Euless, where Manukainiu, Vaenuku and Uhatafe Jr. all played football. The team has been one of the best in Texas in recent years, with three state titles in a span of five seasons from 2005-09 and a trip to the championship game in 2010.

Principal Mike Harris said the deaths have affected a majority of the Euless community, where there is a tight-knit Polynesian community.

"They were students with bright smiles that everybody knew and everybody loved," the principal said.

Texas A&M associate athletic director Alan Cannon said Manukainiu was known for his sense of humor and "will be sorely missed as a person you enjoyed being around." He said the football staff was working Tuesday to notify teammates of his death. Players are scheduled to report to campus Sunday to begin practicing for the upcoming season.

Cannon said Manukainiu was to wear jersey No. 90 and that it was too early to determine if players will affix the number to their uniforms as a tribute. The NCAA must approve any such recognition, Cannon said.

Sprint reports 'highest-ever' revenue of $7.2 billion for Q2 2013, loses $1.6 billion on Nextel shutdown

Sprint reports 'highestever' revenue of $72 billion for Q2 2013

Sprint has just announced its second quarter 2013 financial results, and while it's pay as you go plans are paying off in terms of income, shutdowns and charges caused a huge loss. The company posted $7.2 billion in earnings, its "highest ever" total and an eight percent increase over last year, but also took a net loss of $1.6 billion for the quarter. It's chalking that up to a huge depreciation charge of $430 million and another non-cash hit of $623 million due to the Nextel platform shutdown, which is finally complete. However, the company added that over 4 million Nextel subscribers were "recaptured" to the Sprint platform since the transition commenced in early 2011. The shutdown and loss were anticipated, though and apart from that, Sprint said it's in good place, having achieved "record levels of... postpaid subscribers, service revenue and postpaid ARPU."

The operator now has 4G-LTE coverage in 151 markets, including 41 that are new as of today, including Philadelphia, the Bronx , Brooklyn, Jacksonville, Nashville and Oakland. As for subscribers, post pre-paid and post-paid customers are up from last year, though churn (turnover) is also up a touch over Q2 2012 to 1.83 percent. Eighty-six percent of its postpaid handset sales were smartphones, including about 1.4 million iPhones sold during the quarter. Going forward, the company just launched a raft of new data plans, including an Unlimited offering that guarantees customers who sign up will get it for life.

Concur: Small Businesses Spend More on Travel

small businesses spend

Small businesses are playing the role of big spenders on the road.?A new study found that small businesses spend more on travel than big business.

The Concur Expense IQ report covering 2012 reveals that small businesses spend about 24 percent more per year on these expenses than bigger companies. The report is a survey of Concur users and how much they spent annually on travel and entertainment.

The study also specifies some reasons for that disparity:

Negotiating leverage, driven by scale and sophisticated spend management strategies, continues to give large market companies significant advantages in controlling their T&E spending.

Air Travel

Items like baggage fees on flights and other ancillary charges for business travelers nearly doubled in the last year, the study found. Concur users spent $58 million on these fees in 2012, compared to $30 million the year prior.

Despite the amount of these fees, which are the same for big or small businesses, it?s small businesses that are paying more often. The report also found that small businesses purchase 37 percent more airline tickets in a quarter than big businesses.

Food and Lodging

Even if your business travel doesn?t require flight, small businesses are paying more for hotel rooms and rental cars, too. The average small business traveler will spend about $736 per quarter, compared to a big business traveler?s $608 per quarter for lodging. Other expenses on the ground also hit small businesses harder.

A small business traveler is dining out about 40 times a year and spends around $340 every three months on take-out or restaurant meals. The big business traveler eats out less often and typically spends less too.

The study found that each small business traveler will spend about $500 more per quarter than a big business traveler. And every expense involved in travel ? from airline tickets to hotels to food ? is typically higher than what a big business traveler would pay.

Concur provides integrated travel and expense management solutions to 18,000 business customers around the world serving 20 million end users.

Earthquakes: Another source of global-warming gas, scientists say

A team of scientists has linked a major earthquake in southwest Asia in 1945 to the ongoing release of methane gas from the Arabian seafloor.

By Elizabeth Barber,?Contributor / July 29, 2013

Beachgoers wade into the Arabian Sea in the Indian state of Kerala. A team of scientists has found that a 1945 earthquake there released trapped methane from the seafloor, a find that could have bearing on future climate models.

A devastating earthquake in 1945 sent millions of cubic feet of methane bubbling up to the earth?s surface, scientists have found, in new research that could add another source of the greenhouse gas to future climate models.

The latest research joins burgeoning scientific interest in the potential contribution of methane, a greenhouse gas that is significantly more effective as a heat trapper than carbon dioxide, to global warming. Last week, a separate article in Nature called the methane gas below the Arctic ?a global economic time-bomb,? referring to the potential costs to the world should global warming thin the Arctic ice enough to release the gas there.

This latest paper, though, identifies not a manmade source of atmospheric methane, but a natural one: earthquakes.

?It had earlier been speculated that there was a direct connection between earthquakes and methane seepage,? says David Fischer, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Bremen in Germany and the lead author on the paper, published in Nature Geoscience. ?But we are the first to prove it and suggest the mechanistic natural process behind it.?

Fischer and his team began their project looking not necessarily for an earthquake-methane link, but for a general portrait of where methane could be found in marine sediments. First, the team analyzed sediments drilled in 2007 from the northern Arabian Sea, near Pakistan?s coast. Sure enough, there was methane there: one of those cores had methane just 5.2 feet below the sea floor, a sign of some cataclysmic event that has sent the gas surging upward, the scientists found.

And that event, the scientists realized, was readily available: an 8.1 magnitude earthquake ? the strongest earthquake ever reported in the Arabian Sea ? had roiled southwestern Asia in 1945, sending a tsunami plunging into India and Pakistan and killing some 4,000 people.

?We wanted to investigate if, and where, methane seeps out of the sediments,? says Dr. Fischer. ?Only at a later stage we inferred a causal relation of the seepage and the earthquake. This was not entirely anticipated.?

Overall, the team found that some 261 million cubic feet of methane have leaked up to the earth?s surface during the few decades following the major earthquake. That seepage is ongoing, the scientists said.

Major earthquakes and their associated methane gas release could be an included factor in future climate change models, though much research is still needed to determine how much that gas might influence global warming, Fischer said.?

"We simply can?t tell yet, if and how much our findings affect climate models,? says Fischer. ?Maybe it turns out to be important, maybe it doesn't. We?ll see."

"We just wanted to make sure that those colleagues writing the (very important!) IPCC-reports [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports] are aware there might be another source of methane/carbon to the environment,? he says.

Israel cabinet votes on Palestinian prisoner release

July 28, 2013
Latest Update: July 28, 2013 02:28 pm

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (pic) will seek cabinet approval today for a contentious release of 104 veteran Palestinian and Israeli-Arab prisoners, to coincide with the resumption of peace talks.

While the names of the prisoners have yet to be officially published, or even revealed to ministers, they reportedly include militants convicted of killing Israeli women and children or Palestinians suspected of collaborating with Israel.

An unofficial list published by Almagor, a group representing Israeli victims of Palestinian attacks, said that candidates for release also included those jailed for acts such as the killing of a creditor, murder during car theft and a man convicted of strangling his wife whom he suspected of adultery.

The planned releases have brought protests from Israeli victims' families and from Netanyahu's hardline coalition partners.

The premier said in an open letter published on his Facebook page that he too had deep misgivings.

"This is an incomparably difficult decision," he wrote. "It is painful for the bereaved families, it is painful for the entire nation and it is also very painful for me."

Israeli media reported today that the far-right Jewish Home party intends to vote against the plan, while the equally hardline Yisrael Beitenu had given its ministers a free vote.

There were rumblings within Netanyahu's own right-wing Likud party too, with deputy defence minister Danny Danon urging the party's ministers to vote "no" in Sunday's cabinet session, which begins at 2:00pm (Malaysian time).

"I say that this is a diplomatic mistake, a moral mistake,' he told public radio.

"The message we are giving the terrorists is that, at the end of the day, we are freeing them as heroes."

Commentators nevertheless expected Netanyahu to win the vote, albeit by a narrow margin.

A Palestinian official told AFP yesterday that the US-brokered renewal of peace talks, stalled since September 2010, would open in Washington on Tuesday.

Qadura Fares, head of the Palestinian Prisoners' Club which tracks the well-being of Palestinians in Israeli jails, said today that there would be no talks unless all 104 prisoners returned to their homes.

"If they don't free all of them, there will be no negotiations," he told public radio.

In past deals, Israel has expelled some freed prisoners from the occupied West Bank or annexed east Jerusalem to the Gaza Strip or abroad but Fares said that would not be acceptable this time.

"Expulsion is punishment," he said. "These people. who are now over 50 years old, all of them sick, need to be released to their homes."

The cabinet will hear a formal statement from Netanyahu on the resumption of peace talks and mandate a ministerial committee to handle the prisoner release, the government website said.

Israeli news website Ynet said Netanyahu would head the prisoner committee deciding which prisoners are to be freed and when.

The cabinet is also set to draw up a bill to submit any peace treaty with the Palestinians to a referendum.

Such a vote would be a final endorsement of a treaty after ratification by the government and parliament.

The draft is seen as a gesture to right-wing ministers apprehensive of concessions that could be demanded of Israel in the talks.

A cabinet briefing paper said the government saw approval of the new draft as "urgent and important" and said it would be asking parliament to fast-track its passage into law. - AFP, July 28, 2013.

Weiner's campaign manager in NY mayoral race quits

NEW YORK (AP) ? Anthony Weiner vowed to stay in the race for New York City mayor Sunday despite the loss of his campaign manager and the drumbeat of critics questioning his fitness for public office.

"We have an amazing staff, but this isn't about the people working on the campaign. It's about the people we're campaigning for," Weiner said after speaking at a Brooklyn church.

Weiner confirmed that campaign manager Danny Kedem resigned Saturday after reports surfaced that Weiner continued to exchange lewd photos and messages with women despite resigning from Congress in 2011 over the same behavior.

Weiner said he would keep talking about "ideas for the middle class and people struggling to make it every single day" and added, "We knew this was going to be a tough campaign."

Kedem had managed the re-election of John DeStefano Jr. to a 10th term as mayor of New Haven in 2011 and worked on Hillary Clinton's failed 2008 presidential campaign.

The 31-year-old Kedem was credited with helping Weiner pull into the lead among the crowded field of Democratic primary candidates before the latest revelations about Weiner's raunchy online exchanges with women.

Rival mayoral candidate Christine Quinn, speaker of the New York City Council, said on NBC's "Meet the Press" that Weiner has shown "a pattern of reckless behavior, an inability to tell the truth and a real lack of maturity and responsibility."

Unlike other candidates who have urged Weiner to end his campaign, Quinn said opponents should not "say who should or shouldn't get in and out of races."

But she questioned whether he is the right person to lead the city.

"Has he disqualified himself? Yes, he's disqualified himself," Quinn said. "But not just because of these scandals, though that certainly has. He didn't have the qualifications when he was in Congress."

Later on the NBC program, former President Barack Obama senior adviser David Axelrod accused Weiner of "wasting time and space." Axelrod, who noted that his former firm is working for another mayoral candidate, said Americans "believe in second chances, but not third chances."

On CNN's "State of the Union," Republican U.S. Rep. Peter King, the target of a blistering 2010 attack from Weiner over a bill to provide free medical services for World Trade Center recovery workers, said Weiner is "not psychologically qualified to be mayor of the city of New York."

Weiner was forced to discuss his online behavior this past week after a gossip website printed excerpts of conversations Weiner had with Indiana college student Sydney Leathers last summer.

With his wife, Huma Abedin, alongside, Weiner apologized and promised that the "behavior is behind me." He later admitted that he traded racy messages with at least three women since leaving office.

He vowed to stay in the race, saying he believed "people care more about their futures than my past with my wife and my embarrassing things."

Quinn led the race before Weiner jumped in but slipped behind him in most polls over the past two months. But a one-day poll conducted after Weiner's latest revelations has Quinn leading Weiner in the race for the Democratic nomination. The mayoral primary is Sept. 10, and the general election is Nov. 5. The primary winner needs to get at least 40 percent of the vote to avoid a runoff with the No. 2 vote-getter.

William Eimicke, a Columbia University professor of public management who has held New York City and New York state government posts, said the defection of his campaign manager could cripple Weiner's campaign.

"I think he's toast!" Eimicke said in an email.

But veteran city political consultant Bob Liff discounted the effect of the resignation.

"I don't know that the campaign manager makes that much of a difference," Liff said. "I wouldn't write anybody out."

More than 1,000 detainees escape Libyan prison near Benghazi, officials say

By Esam Mohamed, Associated Press

More than 1,000 detainees escaped from a prison near the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi in a massive jailbreak Saturday, officials said, as protesters stormed political party offices in Libya's main cities.

It wasn't immediately clear if the jailbreak at the Koyfiya prison came as part of the demonstrations. Protesters had massed across the country angry over the killing of an activist critical of the country's Muslim Brotherhood group.

Gunmen outside of the prison fired into the air as inmates inside began setting fires, suggesting the jailbreak was preplanned, a Benghazi-based security official said. Those who escaped either face or were convicted of serious charges, a security official at Koyfiya prison said.

The two officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they weren't authorized to speak to journalists.

Special forces later arrested 18 of the escapees, while some returned on their own, said Mohammed Hejazi, a government security official in Benghazi. Three inmates were wounded in the jailbreak and were taken to a local hospital, he said.

Sabri Elmhedwi / EPA

Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zidan speaks during a media conference Tripoli, Libya, 27 July 2013. The briefing focused on latest situation in Benghazi, after the assassination of an anti-Islamist rights activist in the eastern city of Benghazi.

There also was confusion initially about how many prisoners broke out, with numbers of escapees ranging as high as 1,200.

Benghazi's security situation is among the most precarious in post-revolution Libya. Last year, U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed in the attack on a U.S. diplomatic mission in the city.

Meanwhile Saturday, hundreds gathered in the capital Tripoli after dawn prayers, denouncing the Friday shooting death of Abdul-Salam Al-Musmari. They set fire to tires in the street and demanded the dissolution of Islamist parties.

The two incidents highlighted Libya's precarious security situation and the challenges the North African country faces as it tries to restore security nearly two years after the ouster and killing of longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

In Tripoli, protesters appeared to be inspired by events in neighboring Egypt, where millions took to the streets Friday to answer a call from the army chief, who said he wanted a mandate to stop "potential terrorism" by supporters of the country's ousted president, Mohammed Morsi, who hails from the Brotherhood.

"We don't want the Brotherhood, we want the army and the police," Libyan protesters chanted, repeating a slogan also used in Egypt. Libya's nascent security forces are struggling to control the country's militias, most of whom have roots in the rebel groups that overthrew Gadhafi in 2011.

Al-Musmari, who used to publicly criticize the Brotherhood, was killed in a drive-by shooting in Benghazi.

Some protesters stormed the headquarters of a Brotherhood-affiliated political party and another Islamist-allied party in the capital, destroying furniture. Witnesses say a Brotherhood party office was also stormed in Benghazi.

Protesters angry with the Libya's weak central government also targeted the liberal National Forces Alliance (NFA), ransacking its headquarters. The party came on top in Libya's first free parliamentary elections last year.

Security forces in Libya have been unable to impose their authority on the country since Gadhafi's ouster. Militias, many made up of former rebels who fought in the civil war that toppled Gadhafi, have grown in the strength and in many areas rival the security forces in their firepower and reach. The armed forces also rely on militias for help securing the country in some cases.

On Saturday, a colonel was killed by gunmen in Benghazi. Another three security members were killed a day earlier when gunmen opened fire on them.

Security members are frequently targets in the country.

In a press conference Saturday, Prime Minister Ali Zidan said that an investigation was launched into the circumstances around al-Musmari's slaying. He said a foreign criminal investigation team will join Libyan investigators in Tripoli and Benghazi on Monday. He did not offer further details.

The New York-based Human Rights Watch urged the Libyan government to "conduct a prompt and thorough investigation" of al-Musmari's death, believed to be the first targeted killing of a political activist.

"Libya's fragile transition is at stake if political killings go unpunished," said Nadim Houry, deputy Middle East and North Africa director at Human Rights Watch. "This makes investigating al-Musmari's murder all the more urgent."

Libya's top religious figure, Grand Mufti Sheikh Sadeq al-Ghariani, warned his countrymen earlier in the week against copying Egypt and bringing down the Libyan government. Morsi, Egypt's first freely elected president, was ousted by the military on July 3 after millions took to the streets demanding his removal.

Al-Ghariani's warning was posted Wednesday on his official website against unspecified parties "trying to create crises in electricity and gas, and those taking advantage of tribal loyalties to the ousted dictator Moammar Gadhafi." Long hours of blackouts and the severe shortage of fuel contributed to Morsi's unpopularity.

I love this galaxy. Not only does M74 display a near perfect spiral form but if this latest supernova is the third to ?go boom? in the galaxy in just 11 years. The new object, designated PSN J01364816+1545310, was discovered blazing near 12.4 magnitude by the?Lick Observatory Supernova Search?at Lick Observatory near San Jose, Calif. ?PSN? stands for ?possible supernova? and the long string of numbers give the object?s position in the sky using the celestial equivalents of latitude and longitude.

M74 is a classic spiral galaxy with arms that appear to unwind from a bright, star-packed nucleus. Located 32 million light years away in the constellation Pisces, M74 contains about 100 billion stars. The spiral arms are dotted with dense star clusters and pink clouds of fluorescing hydrogen gas. The Lick search uses a fully robotic or automated 30-inch (76 cm) telescope dedicated to scanning the skies for new supernovae. It nailed M74?s latest exploding star on July 25. Two previous supernovae flared in the galaxy -?SN 2002ap?and?SN 2003gd?- and rose to 12th and 13th magnitude respectively before fading away into obscurity.

Three?s the charm as they say. A team of astronomers using a spectrograph at the Faulkes Telescope South at Siding Spring, Australia teased apart the supernova?s light and now know exactly what blew up. It appears our newcomer was originally a supergiant star at least 8 times as massive as the sun.?After a relatively brief lifetime measured in the millions of years, the supergiant gobbled up the last of its fuel. With the gas gauge on ?empty? and no new energy being produced in the core to hold back ?the force of gravity, the star imploded, sending a shockwave rocketing back in the opposite direction that tore it to bits.

When a massive star runs out of nuclear fuel in its core, the energy that has prevented the force of gravity from crushing the star is gone. Gravity now finally wins and collapses the star which then rebounds in a huge explosion. Credit: ESO

When a massive star runs out of nuclear fuel in its core, the energy that has prevented the force of gravity from crushing it is gone. Gravity finally gains the upper hand causing the star to implode. A rebounding shock wave blows it to bits. Sometime a city-sized, dense stellar remnant called a neutron star remains after the blast. Credit: ESO

Called a Type II supernova explosion, the blast hurtles star stuff into space at up to 45,000 miles per second (70,000 km/sec). More amazing, a powerful supernova explosion can release as much energy as the sun during its entire 10 billion year lifetime. No wonder even small telescopes can spot these cataclysmic events from millions of light years away!

As additional photos and measurements come in, ?amateur astronomers with 8-inch and larger telescopes will have no problem spying the supernova once the last quarter moon departs the vicinity. It?s located 93? (1.5?) ?east and 135? (more than 2?) southeast of the galaxy?s core. The map and photo will help you track it down.

This map measures only about 1/2-degree wide and shows the galaxy up close with the supernova marked SN. Selected star magnitudes from the AAVSO are shown to help you navigate to the object as well as estimate its brightness. North is up, west to the right. While M74 is relatively bright and appears spectacular in long-exposure photos, it looks like a large, dim featureless glow in smaller telescopes. Be patient and take your time to ?star hop? to the supernova using the more detailed map. Matter of fact, you may want to wait until Tuesday morning or later to look. That?s when the waning moon will finally depart the area. Let?s hope our new guest remains bright.

Good luck meeting the latest star to mark the end of its life with the biggest blowout of all. For more information and photos, stop by Dave Bishop?s Latest Supernovae site.

Leak causes oil spill off Rayong

About 50 tonnes of crude oil spilled into the sea off Rayong on Saturday morning after a leak occurred in a pipeline operated by PTT Global Chemical Plc (PTTGC).

PTTGC said the oil slick, enough to fill one tanker truck, was quickly contained.

The incident occurred at 6.50am about 20 kilometres southeast of Map Ta Phut seaport in the eastern province.

The company said it detected the leak as crude from an Omani tanker moored offshore was being transferred to the pipeline for delivery to the PTTGC refinery at Map Ta Phut.

The amount of crude that spilled into the sea was about 50 tonnes or equivalent to the capacity of one large tanker truck, said PTTGC.

As soon as it detected the leak, the company said workers shut the pipeline valve to prevent any further spills.

Anon Sirisaengtaksin, the chief executive of PTTGC, said quick action by the company in cooperation with the Royal Thai Navy and the Marine Department contained the damage.

"All the crude had been eradicated an hour after the accident and residents and fishermen near Map Ta Phut will not be affected by the crude oil spill," said Mr Anon.
?
He said the company staged frequent accident drills to deal with spills and related incidents. It also monitors pollution with the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) and the Pollution Control Department.
?
Mr Anon said PTTGC would continue to monitor conditions in the Gulf of Thailand until it can be certain that not a drop of crude oil remains in the water.

"Tourists and fishermen who live there can be sure that no oil spill will reach their places," said Mr Anon.

Army vets ruck for cancer

VICTORVILLE ? A week after Sterling Cleveland made a stop in Victorville along his cross-country trek, Wayne Whitbeck and James Allred are camping out in the Victor Valley as they ruck across America.

Whitbeck was inspired to Ruck for a Cure after his father died battling cancer. Whitbeck said the motivation to walk across the country came his father?s battle.

?My father was my mentor and a month before he passed away, he was out there chopping a tree,? Whitbeck said. ?He told me, ?son, I?ll be dead in a month and I don?t want your mom to have to do this.? So his drive and determination and his whole life inspired me.?

After planning the trip for over a year, Whitbeck and his James Allred launched the Ruck for a Cure, a nonprofit organization to raise money for St. Jude Children?s Research Hospital.

The duo chose to ruck because of their Army-backgrounds, as they both served as drill sergeants at Fort Jackson in South Carolina.

The two Army veterans left ?icy and rainy? conditions Myrtle Beach, S.C. on February 4 with the goal of reaching San Francisco on August 23.

Whitbeck said the journey has not been easy as they have trekked through three of the country?s four deserts, but it has been amazing.

Its been tough, but Whitbeck said they are happy they got to experience a cool summer night on their way to Victorville. Whitbeck and Allred will participate in the Mavericks Mud Run held in Adelanto on Saturday.

?Arizona?s weather ... was really hard to go out and get water because everything is far in between each other,? said Whitbeck, as he enjoyed a slice of pizza from Oggi?s in Apple Valley. ?It was nice to camp out and sleep and enjoy a cool summer night, prior to last night the coolest night in two months was 90 degrees.?

Allred whose mother battled colon cancer, was inspired by her fight in surpassing the cancer and other family members he has seen struggle with cancer.

The journey has been an adventure of a lifetime for Allred.

Allred said the inspirations and connections of people he met on the side of the road that donated money and gave him gifts will stick with him forever.

Along with rucking for a great cause, Whitbeck and Allred share another thing in common ? they can?t wait to get back to their loved ones.

Whitbeck is a San Francisco Giants fan and can?t wait to get back home and play baseball with his teenage son. Allred and Whitbeck will attend a baseball game at AT&T Park as the Giants host the Pittsburgh Pirates on August 24.

When the two get to San Francisco, they will end a 3,000 journey and be a step closer to finding a cure for cancer.

To follow their journey or to donate money visit www.ruckforacure.org.

AP PHOTOS: Pope observes Via Crucis on Copacabana

Pope Francis started off Friday by hearing confessions from a half-dozen young pilgrims in a Rio de Janeiro park and met privately with a group of juvenile detainees, a priority of his ever since his days as archbishop of Buenos Aires.

A white tent was set up to receive the faithful for confession, with small makeshift confessionals off to the side. Five youths, chosen through a raffle, were selected for confession, a sacrament in which Catholics confess their sins and are forgiven.

The pontiff then praised the elderly during the Catholic Church's festival of youth, saying grandparents are critical for passing on wisdom and religious heritage and are a "treasure to be preserved and strengthened."

Francis ended the day by presiding over one of the church's most solemn rites, a procession re-enacting Christ's crucifixion that was held on Rio's Copacabana beach.

Copacabana, which hosts Carnival and Rolling Stones concerts, staged a wildly theatrical, and very Latin telling of the Way of the Cross, complete with huge stage sets, complex lighting, a full orchestra and a cast of hundreds acting out a modern version of the biblical story.

Here's a gallery of images from the fifth day of the pope' visit to Brazil.
