What a fun new series! It had a few off notes, but on the whole I was really impressed. The heroine, Alex, was surprisingly relatable. I winced over some of her life choices?the one night stands being chief among them?but that never kept me from liking her. She was pretty friendly and down to earth for the most part.

It was refreshing to have such a normal heroine. She has power, sure, but she also has the same worries as any regular Joe on the street. She struggles to pay the bills and has family issues that she prefers not to dwell on. She has a little dog who is the only constant man in her, and that?s the way she likes it. She talks to herself because she spends too much time alone, which is a hard habit to break when she?s temporarily stuck rooming with another person. She doesn?t like to get close to people, but she has her three best friends, and that?s enough for her.

The world that the author created here was very interesting. I won?t deny that it occasionally felt familiar, but it was unique enough to please me. I wish we could have had a little more insight into the soul collectors, but I?m willing to be patient and hope we learn more about them in the next book. I?m very curious to see what exactly makes Alex different from a lot of the other grave witches. Why is Death so accessible to her when he isn?t to the others?

I liked that Alex?s power wasn?t without consequences. It?s nice to have a heroine that doesn?t have an effortless, unending well of power to tap. She didn?t always have the bigger power and she came out on the losing side more often than not. Her one effortless talent, her grave-sight, had a really nasty side effect when she turned it off, too. Suffering from blindness after each session, and having her night vision shot in the long run, really went a long way toward making Alex vulnerable. Even if she had a huge attitude (which she doesn?t), her weaknesses would help soften her. So good choice on the author?s part there. Speaking of her sight?I?m fascinated by the development at the end. I wonder where the author?s going with it.

There were two potential love interests introduced in the book, but I pray the author isn?t turning this into another lame love-triangle. I didn?t like Falin at first, but he grew on me throughout the book. His attitude in the beginning really rubbed me the wrong way and I was praying Alex would withhold information just to spite him. Alas, she is more grown up than me. The further I read on, the more approachable Falin became. He is actually?shocker!?a really nice guy who?s willing to put up with a lot of vague answers and a rather hilarious fear of intimacy. Plus, what we learned about who he is has me quite intrigued.

The second love interest is Death, one of the soul collectors. He?s been popping in and out of Alex?s life since she was little, and although she doesn?t know much about him, they?re friends. Not close friends, mind you, but their relationship is dependable. Death was surprisingly open about his emotions toward the end. I?m not sure if I liked that or not, but I?m willing to hang for the ride and wait to see where the author?s going.

The only real issues I had were the occasional sections of confusion I ran into. Sometimes I?d have to reread an action scene to figure out what magic was doing what, because it felt a little bit confusing and jumbled. Also, I know Alex isn?t the best sleuth out there, but some of the obvious clues she missed made me wince. At least she was honest about her magical skills paying the bills, not her investigative ones. It wasn?t a huge irritant, but I hope she?ll sharpen up a bit in the next one.

LONDON (AFP) ? Pay-TV giant BSkyB was to announce strong results on Friday amid the phone-hacking scandal that forced News Corp. to abandon a takeover bid, a day after backing James Murdoch to remain as chairman.

However, the BSkyB board on Thursday gave Murdoch its "unanimous support", a source close to the satellite broadcaster said.

"The role of the chairman was discussed at some length today and ultimately James Murdoch received the unanimous support of the board," the source told AFP after a BSkyB board meeting.

James Murdoch holds the position at BSkyB in addition to his activities as head of News Corp.'s European and Asian activities, or number three at the US-based group, where he is also chairman of its British newspaper arm News International.

BSkyB's share price meanwhile slumped from 850 pence to below the bid-offer of 700 pence in one week prior to the deal's collapse, knocking ?2.5 billion off the firm's value.

The hacking crisis has meanwhile claimed the jobs of two of Murdoch's closest aides, forced out two of Britain's top policemen and even rattled Prime Minister David Cameron.

Pawlenty: Obama not showing courage in debt crisis (AP)

WASHINGTON ? GOP presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty says President Barack Obama is showing no courage in the debt showdown. "If you're the leader of the free world, would you please come to microphone and quit hiding in the basement about your proposals, and come on up and address the American people? Is he chicken?" the former Minnesota governor told CNN's "State of the Union."

He said Obama needs to talk specifically and publicly about where he would cut entitlement programs to reduce the nation's debt. Obama has been negotiating with congressional leaders in an attempt to raise the government's borrowing limit ahead of an Aug. 2 deadline to avoid a financial default.

"Where's the president of the United States on the most pressing financial challenges of our country on entitlement reform? Where is his specific Medicaid reform proposal? Where is his specific Medicare reform proposal? Where is his Social Security reform proposal?" Pawlenty asked.

"The answer is he doesn't have one. You can't find him publicly talking about that. He's ducking, he's bobbing, he's weaving. He's not leading, and that's not the kind of president we need, and that's why he needs to be removed from office.

Pawlenty himself has criticized for not being aggressive enough in his 2012 campaign.

Progress scarce as debt limit impasse continues (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Progress remains elusive as official Washington grapples day after day for a way out of a debt dilemma that has the government sliding toward a first-ever default on its financial obligations.

President Barack Obama met with House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, at the White House for 90 minutes on Wednesday, but neither side would comment afterward.

The session came a day after the House passed legislation that would increase the government's borrowing authority by $2.4 trillion but condition the release of the money on a litany of tea party demands, including a requirement that Congress adopt a proposed amendment to the Constitution requiring a balanced budget.

Debate on the House plan, dubbed "cut, cap and balance," begins in earnest Thursday in the Senate.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Thursday that the legislation would be an opportunity for lawmakers to "go on record in support of balancing our books or against it," and urged Democrats to join GOP senators in backing the measure.

In brief remarks on the Senate floor, McConnell assailed Obama for his "reckless spending habits" and wondered about the Democrat's recent attempts to "come across as a fiscal conservative."

Democrats are expected to kill the measure ? which they say would demand debilitating cuts to Medicare ? in a vote on Saturday if not before.

Meanwhile, momentum on a separate bipartisan budget plan by the Senate's "Gang of Six" seemed to ebb Wednesday as critics warned the measure contains larger tax increases than advertised and it became plain that the measure comes too late and is too controversial to advance quickly ? particularly as a part of a debt limit package that already would be teetering on a knife's edge.

Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., a member of the Gang of Six, said Thursday that some 40 senators of both parties back the plan his group has brought forward.

But he also said he feels there's too little time between now and Aug. 2 to complete a comprehensive package of spending cuts, benefit program changes and an overhaul of the tax code.

Conrad said doing nothing is not an option, saying that "we're all going to have to do things we'd prefer in a perfect world not to have to do."

Absent a breakthrough between Obama and Republicans, there is a hotly contested backup plan by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., that would give Obama broad new powers to obtain increases in the government's borrowing unless blocked by veto-proof two-thirds margins in both the House and Senate.

Many conservative Republicans are in an uproar over the McConnell plan, and more than 70 House members signed a letter circulated by Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, promising to oppose the proposal.

In a shift, White House press secretary Jay Carney said Obama would back a short-term deal to prevent a disastrous financial default on Aug. 2 but only if a larger and still elusive deficit-cutting agreement was essentially in place.

Officially, the president continued to push for a big compromise that would cut the nation's budget deficit and extend the government's tapped-out borrowing power above the current $14.3 trillion cap. Obama had threatened to veto any stopgap expansion of the nation's debt limit, at one point last week even challenging House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., not to call his bluff about it.

On Wednesday, Carney said if a divided Congress and the White House can agree on a significant deal, Obama would accept a "very short-term extension" of the debt limit to let bigger legislation work its way through Congress.

Obama also is open to the McConnell plan, but it seems barely aloft due to fervent tea party opposition in the House. The hope appears to be that such an option will look a lot better to the House in a week or so, given the lack of other ideas.

What also is becoming clear is that time is running out.

The realistic deadline for agreement is this week, not next week, given the time needed to craft, debate, pass and work out possible differences in legislation between the House and Senate.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said Tuesday that the head of the Congressional Budget Office has told him it could take two weeks to come up with an official cost estimate for even a relatively modest package of spending cuts. That means lawmakers may end up voting on a measure without knowing for sure how much it would save.

Then there are the problems of moving the debt limit increase through the Senate, where the rules allow any single member to force delays.

Parliamentary experts say that if the Senate takes up the debt limit measure on Saturday, it could take more than a week, until Monday, Aug. 1, to pass the measure through that chamber, give the House time to consider it and make changes and then gain Senate approval one more time.

"It's daunting, but it's doable," said Marty Paone, a parliamentary expert with three decades of Senate experience. "If you want to assume the worst, that's how long it will take."

Critics like House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., say the Gang of Six plan would increase taxes by $2 trillion over the next 10 years instead of the $1 trillion-plus claimed by proponents like Conrad ? a development likely to stunt momentum among Republicans.

The revenue increase is larger than advertised because the $1.2 trillion in new taxes comes on top of an underlying assumption used by Obama's deficit commission ? and incorporated by the Senate group in its plan ? that the Bush-era income tax brackets for family income exceeding $250,000 would revert to the higher, Clinton administration levels.

The Gang of Six plan also earned poor reviews from liberals like Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., who said it would "balance the budget on the backs of the vulnerable."

And Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon, R-Calif., who is chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, blasted the plan in a missive to his panel members, saying it would cut the Pentagon much too deeply and would unfairly curb military health and retirement benefits.

The Gang of Six plan promises almost $4 trillion in deficit cuts, including an immediate 10-year, $500 billion down payment that would come as Congress sets caps on the agency budgets it passes each year. It also requires an additional $500 billion in cost curbs on federal health care programs, cuts to federal employee pensions, curbs in the growth of military health care and retirement costs, and modest cuts to farm subsidies.

Conrad made his remarks in an interview Thursday on MSNBC.

Lawyer: Melaku has no grudge against Marines (AP)

LEESBURG, Va. ? A former Marine accused of taking potshots at the Pentagon and other military targets with a handgun said his client doesn't harbor any kind of grievance against the Corps, his lawyer said Wednesday.

"I don't believe this was based on any grievance against the Marines," defense attorney Robert May said, referring to his client, Yonathan Melaku, 22, of Alexandria. "As far as I know he was happy with his Marine Corps service."

Melaku is charged in U.S. District Court in Alexandria with a series of overnight shootings beginning in October that had targets including the Pentagon and the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico. He was arrested last month after police spotted him in Arlington National Cemetery after dark, acting suspiciously. His arrest that day prompted a security scare that resulted in closures of many of the highways leading to the Pentagon during the morning rush hour.

After the arrest, investigators said they linked Melaku to the series of shootings that had occurred in October and November of last year, which alarmed northern Virginia authorities at the time. During the monthslong search for a suspect in those shootings, police said they believed the shooter might be someone with ties to the military who had some sort of grievance.

Since Melaku's arrest, authorities have not commented on a motive.

On Wednesday, Melaku appeared at a pretrial hearing in Leesburg on unrelated state charges for larceny connected to a series of car break-ins. Prosecutors dropped four of the six larceny charges against Melaku, and in exchange Melaku waived his right to a preliminary hearing on the remaining two charges. Those two felony counts will be sent to a grand jury, which is expected to issue an indictment when it meets Aug. 8. Melaku may enter into a plea bargain on those charges at that time, his lawyer said.

Melaku said little during Wednesday's brief hearing, waving to his parents as he was led out of court in a red striped jail jumpsuit. His parents declined comment.

He is to remain in custody at the Loudoun County jail.

May spoke briefly to reporters following Wednesday's hearing. He said he briefly represented Melaku on the federal charges and consulted with him about them, but that he is no longer retained on the federal charges. May declined to discuss the federal charges in detail.

Melaku served in the Marines for several years as a lance corporal in the reserves. He was dismissed from the Corps last month because of the larceny charges.
