The workers? strike at auto component manufacturer Comstar Automotive Technologies entered the 21st day Wednesday with employees deciding to go on a daylong fast Friday, said union officials.
?Despite the summons issued by the Tamil Nadu government to attend the conciliation meeting Tuesday, the company did not do so,? Comstar Automotive Technologies Employees? Union general secretary D. Natarajan told IANS.
?We have decided to go on a daylong hunger strike Friday and send individual telegrams to Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa to bring our plight to her notice,? he said.
He said the management did not attend the last four conciliation meetings.
The Tamil Nadu labour department had issued notice to Comstar Automotive to attend the conciliation meeting Aug 30 to sort out the differences.
According to Natarajan, the company wrote to the labour department saying they were not attending the meeting to protest against the assault of some officials by the workers.
?It is a totally false charge. As per our information, the police have closed the assault complaint lodged by the company,? Natarajan said.
Comstar Automotive officials were not available for comments.
The workers are demanding recognition of their union and negotiations over a three-year wage accord that ended March.
The company has around 490 permanent workers and around 350 temporary staff ? trainees and apprentices, Natarajan said.
?The company has hired around 160 trainees after the permanent workers struck work Aug 11. The trainees and apprentices are being involved in actual production. As per law, they should not be directly involved in manufacturing activity,? Natarajan added.
Comstar Automotive, based in Sriperumbudur district, manufactures and supplies auto components like starters and alternators for cars and light commercial vehicles.
According to its website, it is a Tier-I supplier for companies like Ford Motor Company, Volvo, Tata Motors and others.

Oh boy. If you thought casting Bristol Palin and Kate Gosselin for previous seasons of "Dancing With the Stars" caused an uproar, the latest casting rumor could bring about yet another frenzy of passionate comments.
According to TMZ, one of the celebs who will be announced as a "DWTS" competitor tonight will be none other than former prosecutor/current TV host Nancy Grace. The opinionated Grace made plenty of headlines and received much criticism?for her coverage of the Casey Anthony murder trial. She currently hosts "Nancy Grace" on HLN.
The website reports that Grace was spotted in Atlanta last week, where she met her pro partner.

John Donne helps us see that we are all connected, even in death.
You have probably heard the famous phrase ?No man is an island?, whether in a classroom, or being quoted by one of your more pretentious friends. But, you might be less familiar with the piece of writing this expression?originates from: Meditation XVII by John Donne, a reflection on death that the writer?composed during his recovery from a serious illness in 1623.
Though the work contains deeply religious themes, its message is universal: All of mankind is connected as a whole, and each and every death affects us all. The part I find most beautiful is the metaphor of life as a book, in which we are all?chapters:
?And when she buries a man, that action concerns me; all mankind is of one author,?and is one volume; when one man dies, one chapter is not torn out of the book, but translated?into a better language; and every chapter must be so translated.?
This idea sets us all as equals, and makes every death equally?important and moving. No matter who is passing, it should affect us because every?human is connected. I also love that Donne rejects the idea of a chapter being ?torn out?. Rather,?dying is a next stage or ?language? that we are ?translated into?, an infinitely better stage. It is?something that must happen and should be acknowledged.
Donne continues:
?God employs several translators; some pieces are translated by age,?some by sickness, some by war, some by justice; but God?s hand is in every translation, and his?hand shall bind up all our scattered leaves again, for that library where every book shall lie open?to one another.?
We are all ?translated? through different?means, but this doesn?t mean we are different or separate from each other. We are not ?scattered?leaves? alone in this universe; we are allied, and death is a place where we can all be recognized?as equal.
Donne goes on to make his point even clearer:
??any man?s death diminishes me,because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it?tolls for thee.?
The ?bell? he refers to is the bell that churches in his time would ring for each member of the congregation who passed away. But regardless of?whom it is being rung for, it reminds Donne that his own death is inevitable. Thus, every tolling?is important: each is a reminder and a signal that one of our own has gone.
The poet also makes sure to note that mourning each death does not cheapen our grief in
any way, but rather, helps us grow:
?Neither can we call this a begging of misery, or a borrowing?of misery, as though we were not miserable enough of ourselves, but must fetch in more from?the next house, in taking upon us the misery of our neighbors. Truly it were an excusable?covetousness if we did; for affliction is a treasure, and scarcely any man hath enough of it.?
The idea of suffering as a treasure is one that I believe not enough people take?into consideration; certainly in the moment suffering is miserable, but so much more is gained by?the end result. And, according to Donne, very few of us have enough ?affliction?. No matter?what we may think, we could always use more, in order to develop. As he states in the next?line, ?No man hath affliction enough, that is not matured and ripened by it??. There?is real value in sadness and mourning, because we become stronger people for it.
Finally, John Donne concludes by further examining this benefit:
?Another may be sick?too, and sick to death, and this affliction may lie in his bowels, as gold in a mine, and be of no?use to him; but this bell that tells me of his affliction, digs out, and applies that gold to me: if by?this consideration of another?s danger, I take mine own into contemplation, and so secure?myself, by making my recourse to my God??
In thinking of others? pain, we are?made better by it and reflect on our own lives. We cherish them, as well as become open to the?concept of death. Overall, death really makes us grateful for our own lives, and this could be the?greatest treasure of all.

Big Sean's VMA-Nominated 'My Last' Almost Didn't Happen

On his 2011 MTV Video Music Awards nomination for his single "My Last," Big Sean told MTV News, "If I win Best New Artist, I'm gonna go crazy, because I really worked hard as hell." The funny thing is that as big as the Chris Brown-assisted single was for him, Kanye West's understudy originally bucked at the idea of recording the poppy single.
"When No ID gave me that beat for the song 'My Last,' I did not want to do it at all," the Finally Famous MC revealed.
Luckily for Sean, he was convinced otherwise. The song shot up the charts and peaked at #1 on the Billboard rap chart and #4 on the R&B/hip-hop chart. Ultimately, the single's success helped the Detroit rapper land the #3 album in the country, finishing behind Beyoncé's #1 LP, 4, and Adele's 21.
Sean continued to make strides in his breakout year, snagging an opening spot on Wiz Khalifa's Rolling Papers Tour, being named one of MTV Jams' 2011 Fab 5 inductees and, of course, his Best New Artist nom at the VMAs.
He has producer No ID to thank. "He was like, 'Man, do you want to be a mixtape rapper forever, or do you want to make songs people can live to and dance to?' " Sean recalled. "And then I was in the studio with Chris, played it for him, and he went crazy."
Sounds like a no brainer.

When African music legend Fela Kuti died in 1997, his son Seun -- then just 14 years old -- took over his father's band, Egypt 80.
Now he's well on his way to becoming a Nigerian afrobeat pioneer in his own right -- as well as a fiery and energetic performer with a strong social and political conscience. In this episode of Quick Hits, we visit with Seun in Lagos and capture exclusive performances centered around his second album, "From Africa with Fury: Rise."?

"Rise" is the title song on Seun Kuti and Egypt 80?s new album. In the Fela tradition of Afrobeat, it?s an angry song ? protesting against corrupt leaders and corporations exploiting Africa?s resources. It?s also a big band tour de force, with echoes of James Brown and Miles Davis. Above all, it?s a call to rise against injustice.
This is Seun?s incendiary anthem, but there?s an underlying sadness here, too, as if he knows all too well the suffering his people have endured. The constant refrain: We want a better life but "our stomachs still empty."

As a tribute to his father, Seun Kuti opens his concert with one of Fela?s signature songs, "Zombie," a scathing indictment of the Nigerian army for blindly following repressive orders. This is Afrobeat at its most provocative written by a man who repeatedly challenged the military regime and paid the price in countless beatings and arrests. The older members of Egypt 80 played this dangerous, defiant song with Fela himself.
The lyrics are a mixture of English and Nigerian dialect: "Zombie no go go, unless you tell him to go?Zombie no go think, unless you tell him to think." The song is featured in the musical "Fela!" which is now touring the U.S. after its Broadway and London runs.

Pitbull feels Lindsay Lohan should be thanking him, rather than suing him, for taking a shot at her with a memorable line in his hit song, "Give Me Everything."

When usually scoff when we hear about Android tablets going for $199. But when we hear about stalwart retailer X10 selling one for $199, we'll at least give things a listen. The X10 AirPad promises to be the "best tablet on the market for under $200."
Let's talk specs: You've got a 7-inch display with a measly 800x480 resolution. (By comparison, the Acer Iconia a100 and HTC Flyer each has a 7-inch touchscreen at 1024x600 resolution.) So it's fewer pixels, but that means less work for the 1.2 GHz Rockchip 2918 processor. That's all pushing Android 2.3 Gingerbread, so it's got that going for it, which is nice. There's 512MB of RAM on board, and 4GB on internal storage. There's a 2MP camera, which we're probably safe in ignoring on spec.
The 4000 mAh batter is rated as 6 hours of movie or music playback (we have a hard time believing music playback takes as much juice, but whatever), or 4 hours of Wifi Internet accvess. Consumer sentiment sinks in August on government despair (Reuters)
NEW YORK (Reuters) ? U.S. consumer sentiment sank in August as consumers lost confidence in lawmakers' ability to stave off the threat of another recession, a survey released on Friday showed.
The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index edged up from its mid-August level but was still consistent with recession-era lows. The index has only been lower in three other surveys, which were taken in April and May 1980 and November 2008.
The final August reading on the overall index of consumer sentiment was at 55.7, down from 63.7 the month before. It was slightly better than August's preliminary reading of 54.9, which had been the lowest level since May 1980.
Economists polled by Reuters had forecast a reading of 56.0.
"Consumers have shifted from being optimistic about the potential impact of monetary and fiscal policies to a sense of despair and pessimism about the role of the government," survey director Richard Curtin said in a statement.
Recent political wrangling over raising the U.S. debt ceiling appeared to take its toll. Spontaneous negative references to the government were made by 25 percent of respondents, above the prior record of 20 percent in April 2010.
The survey's barometer of current economic conditions was 68.7, down from 75.8 in July and below a forecast of 69.3. The component is at its lowest level since August 2009, just after the official end of the recession.
The outlook also worsened, with the gauge of consumer expectations falling to 47.4 from July's final reading of 56.0, but above an expected 45.7.
The survey's one-year inflation expectation rose to 3.5 percent from 3.4 percent, while the five-to-10-year inflation outlook held steady at 2.9 percent.

Insight: Anti-corruption campaign awakens India's middle class (Reuters)
NEW DELHI (Reuters) ? Mahesh Kundu paid $45 for a driving license, Rupam Bhatia $110 to be admitted to hospital and Vishrant Chandra $130 for a marriage certificate. These are the commonplace bribery stories experienced by middle-class Indians who have poured into the streets to say "enough is enough."
Corruption in India is as old as the Ramayana, when the evil giant Ravana bribed a guardian of hell to avoid punishment in the ancient Indian epic. What is unprecedented is the spontaneous middle-class anti-graft movement coalescing around hunger-fasting activist Anna Hazare, a former army soldier- turned-social activist, who has created an Indian "spring" of rebellion against politics as usual.
Tens of thousands of people have joined peaceful protests across the country, forcing a weak and fumbling government and an equally hapless opposition to try to placate growing frustration and anger at the political class.
"Anna Hazare has raised our inner conscience," said Vishrant Chandra, a 35-year-old sales manager at Sun Life insurance in New Delhi, who had his own story to tell.
"A marriage certificate cost 6,000 rupees ($130)," said Chandra, smartly dressed and wearing a sticker saying "Anna. We are with you," as he described his brush with corruption.
"Agents outside the marriage certificate office roam around. Those are the ones you pay," said Chandra as he wiped sweat from his forehead in the sweltering sun at the Ramlila ground, where Hazare lay on a public stage in the sweltering monsoon heat in the second week of his fast.
India has a long history of civil movements, topped by Mahatma Gandhi's non-violent protest that led to the end of British colonial rule. But this is a rare instance of India's middle class putting aside their material concerns to take to the streets for a political cause.
The near-double-digit economic growth India has enjoyed since the economy was opened up in the early 1990s has elevated millions of people to the middle class. They have long been apolitical, with many of them shunning the ballot box and forking out bribes to get by, sustaining a system where corruption became an unchallenged way of life.
"What is happening is a collective guilt," Shekhar Kapur, a critically acclaimed Indian film maker, told CNN-IBN. "Many of those who are coming out haven't voted or were not of voting age. They realize they have to take charge to change society."
Can this movement, in other words, transform a deeply embedded culture and make bribery socially unacceptable?
"I OPTED TO BRIBE"
In small discrete ways, it has already begun to do so. A website set up last year to anonymously report bribes, I Paid A Bribe (www.ipaidabribe.com), has received 13,000 reports, most linked to the police.
"When I was departing for U.S. from Mumbai Airport. Customs officer asked me to pay $100 because my wife's last name was not changed to mine in her passport. I opted to bribe because it was 1 a.m. ... and we were traveling with our new born baby 2 months old," said one anonymous post on the website dated August 18.
A series of high profile scandals -- including the disastrous mismanagement of the Commonwealth Games and the sale of lucrative mobile phone licenses that cost the state possibly $39 billion in lost revenues -- appear to be a key tipping point.
Corruption has been worsening in India over the years. Transparency International's corruption index in 2010 ranked India 87th, level with Albania and below China in 78th place. India was in 84th place in 2009 and 69th a decade ago.
Transparency's landmark 2005 study of corruption in India found that as many as 62 percent of all citizens have had first-hand experience in paying bribes or using influence peddling to get jobs done in public offices.
"Everywhere you turn in India, from government to schools and hospitals to police, we have to tolerate corruption," said 49-year-old Rupam K. Bhatia, an optician who closed his business in Mumbai last Friday and turned away patients to attend a protest.
Hazare has given the government a deadline of August 30 to pass draconian anti-corruption laws. The government says it can't do it that quickly -- anti-graft legislation has been in the works for the past 42 years.
"This is just one finger," Bhatia said, holding up his index finger. "This is five fingers. And this," he shouted, his face flushing as he clenched his hand, "is the fight! This is individuals coming together to say that for too long we have accepted that corruption is everywhere."
"Just this April I was in an accident," he said, holding up his wrist to show two large scars, "and the police and the doctors demanded a bribe of 5,000 rupees ($110) just to allow me to hospital and write up a report."
MOVEMENT OR MUTINY?
Hazare wants the prime minister, judges, ministers, members of parliament and bureaucrats all to come under the scope of a powerful ombudsman. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh says such strict laws would undermine parliamentary democracy, and corruption can't just be waved away "with a magic wand."
Indeed, Indian bureaucracy is almost a law unto itself, abetted by a lack of accountability, corrupt politicians and greedy businessmen. Part of the problem is the sheer density of India's regulatory regime, a legacy of British rule which created a ubiquitous bureaucracy to help tame an inherently unruly country.
That is one of the key challenges if this movement is to become a real turning point and not just one of India's many episodic mutinies.
Santosh Desai, a novelist and chief executive of Future Brands, thinks it can have a lasting impact.
"Regardless of whether one agrees with the Anna Hazare movement or not, it would be difficult to deny that what we are seeing today is something very significant," he wrote in a column in the Times Of India.
"It does not represent the interests of a regional or narrow social group; although it is led by the middle class, corruption is an issue that affects everybody, particularly the poor. And finally, what we are seeing, perhaps for the first time, is a demand for law-making that comes from people rather than their representatives."
MIDDLEMEN AND SUBSIDIES
Corruption has hurt the poor most, and they had the fewest few recourses to fight it. Middlemen have skimmed off chunks of their wages and food subsidies targeted for the poor.
Nearly half of India's 1.2 billion population depend on farming for their livelihoods. Many them rely on state subsidies and are reluctant to challenge local or federal governments over endemic graft.
That is why the rise of the urban middle class is a more dangerous challenge for the ruling Congress party, which has long relied on the rural poor for votes.
India's middle class will swell to 267 million people by 2016, from 160 million today, and will account for almost 40 percent of the country's population after 15 years, according to a report by the National Council for Applied Economic Research.
The number of Indians living in cities will almost double to 590 million by 2030 from 340 million in 2008, according to consulting firm McKinsey, which noted a chronic lack of spending that could lead to a breakdown of urban services. Having to pay bribes to get public services they should get free is helping to fuel the growing public outrage over corruption.
The protesters also express remorse over paying bribes, saying they have been too complacent, too lazy to stand in queues for services and would rather pay someone off or avoid a traffic ticket by paying off the police.
"Yesterday bribery was accepted, today it's not," said Sanjeev Sahay, 39, a litigation lawyer at the High Court in Delhi, who took his two small children to the protest.
"You do it because everyone does it. No one likes to give a bribe. Say you need some building permits, if you pay 10,000 rupees ($220) you'll get it in two days, if you don't the authorities will slap you with 20 objections and you spend months trying to fight them."
"The middle class has always had a much higher tolerance because it could pay the bribes. This has now broken. Enough is enough."
Mahesh Kundu, a 24-year-old software developer in Gurgaon, a fast-growing town outside Delhi, and his colleagues use an office chatroom to discuss how to take part in the Hazare protests without affecting their software project.
"We set up a working shift so we could join Anna and protest while not affecting our work. Our superiors supported us," he said.
Like many protesters in Delhi, Kundu laments having once paid a middleman $55 to avoid the bureaucratic process of obtaining a driving license.
"I don't feel good about it. Everyone does this. It's really as much driven by laziness to get stuff done quickly. We have to start changing this. Set good examples."

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced grants for more than 900 agricultural producers and rural small businesses across the country to implement renewable energy and energy efficiency measures in their operations. Secretary Vilsack made the announcement as part of President Obama?s rural economic bus tour in the Midwest where today he highlighted efforts underway to reduce our country?s dependence on foreign oil, which will increase the economic competitiveness of rural America and promote job creation.
?These investments enable our farmers, ranchers and rural small business owners to develop renewable energy systems and make energy efficiency improvements that will save them thousands of dollars in energy costs each year,? Vilsack said. ?This funding is an important part of the Obama Administration?s plan to conserve natural resources, create jobs and lead our country on the path to becoming more energy independent.?
The grants are being provided through the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP), a 2008 Farm Bill initiative. REAP offers funds for farmers, ranchers and rural small businesses to purchase and install renewable energy systems and make energy-efficiency improvements. These federal funds leverage other funding sources for small businesses. In all, USDA announced more than $11.6 million in energy grants today.
The REAP program is helping many agricultural producers and rural small businesses reduce energy consumption. For example, Simpsons Brothers Greenhouses, LLC in Ovid, Mich., was selected to receive an $18,000 grant to make energy-efficiency improvements to its greenhouse operations, including installing greenhouse energy curtains that are designed to reduce energy consumption. These improvements are expected to reduce the company?s energy purchases by 42 percent and save more than $12,000 in annual energy expenses.
A family farm in Scales Mound, Ill. will use an $18,439 grant to install photovoltaic panels that will generate solar electricity for a dairy barn. The farm operates 234 certified organic acres in the rolling hills of Northwestern Illinois to raise corn, oats, hay and 45 milking cows. The solar system will power the lighting in the barn during milking, the vacuum pump, the milk cooler, and the fans. The system will offset about 49 percent of their annual farm energy consumption.
Kraft Fertilizer, Inc. in Princeville, Ill., will use their $13,250 grant to install a geothermal system in new warehouse. The new building is replacing a similarly sized warehouse that is currently heated by a propane furnace. The geothermal system will circulate a water-based solution through a buried loop system that takes advantage of the constant 55 degree ground temperature. The new system will use only about nine percent of the BTUs used by the current system.
In Jackson, Mich., Lindale Farms, LLC was selected to receive a $6,000 grant to assist with the cost of installing a 4.3 kilowatt photovoltaic solar generating system to produce electricity that will be sold directly to the local utility. It is estimated that the new system will produce about 5,000 kilowatt hours annually. The owners expect to recoup the cost of this project in about 3 years.
Funding of each award is contingent upon the recipient meeting the conditions of the grant agreement. Grants can finance up to 25 percent of a project?s cost, not to exceed $500,000 for renewables, $250,000 for efficiency. Today?s announcement is an example of investments the Obama Administration is making to help create jobs and grow the rural economy. In June, President Obama signed an Executive Order establishing the first White House Rural Council, chaired by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. Yesterday, President Obama hosted the White House Rural Economic Forum at Northeast Iowa Community College in Peosta, Iowa. Vice President Biden lauds Japanese resolve, visits tsunami area
SENDAI, Japan ? U.S. Vice President Joe Biden on Tuesday praised the resolve of the Japanese people in their efforts to recover from the tsunami and reaffirmed the two countries' alliance as vital for regional peace and prosperity.
In a speech at Sendai's airport, which American military personnel helped clear of debris after the tsunami, Biden spoke of the U.S. public's admiration of Japan after the March 11 disaster, which left about 20,000 people dead or missing and ravaged hundreds of miles of coastline.
"The disaster met its match in the legendary industriousness and relentless perseverance of the Japanese people," he said.
Biden, who also visited China and Mongolia during his eight-day Asian trip, stressed the strong economic and military ties between Japan and the U.S., calling their security alliance the "foundation of this region's security and prosperity for over half a century."
Under the pact, nearly 50,000 American troops are stationed in Japan, many of whom participated in a humanitarian relief mission called Operation Tomodachi, or Operation Friend, after March's threefold disaster ? earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis.
Biden laid flowers at the site of a destroyed home not far from the airport and visited evacuees living in temporary housing, where he chatted, shook hands and handed out baseball caps.
Earlier Tuesday, he met with Prime Minister Naoto Kan, who thanked him for the "enormous assistance" from the U.S. after the disaster.
Kan is widely expected to resign in coming weeks or even days over his administration's perceived lack of leadership in handling the triple crisis.

Clark Gable grandson charged with crimes in LA (Reuters)
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? The grandson of the late actor Clark Gable was charged in Los Angeles on Tuesday with pointing a laser at a police helicopter and momentarily blinding two officers on board, prosecutors said.
Clark James Gable, 22, was set to be arraigned on Friday on three counts of discharging a laser at an aircraft.
The late actor's namesake aimed the green laser at a Los Angeles police helicopter flying above a nighttime event in Hollywood on July 28, according to the local District Attorney's Office.
The laser was flashed twice more at the helicopter, and the officers determined the beam came from a small red car, prosecutors said. Officers on the ground stopped the vehicle, and arrested Gable, who was riding as a passenger.
Gable faces up to three years in prison if convicted.
The late Clark Gable was an Oscar-winning actor best known for his role in 1939 classic film "Gone with the Wind." He died in 1960.
