10 Greatest Moments in Flight

Humanity's tree-dwelling ancestors probably never dreamed that their descendants could eventually fly aboard airships, winged aircraft and spacecraft into the skies and beyond Earth. Each great moment in flight inspired the next generation of aviators to try flying higher, faster and farther as they shaped the course of human history.

Early balloon and airship flights led the way, but the Wright brothers' Flyer demonstration at Kitty Hawk became the milestone celebrated by most people. Daring aviators flew the aircraft descendants of the Wright Flyer as they took on the challenges of flying across the world's oceans and faster than the speed of sound ? even leaving the Earth's atmosphere aboard rocket ships as they inaugurated the era of spaceflight.

The First Hot-Air Balloon:?Modern flight began with observations of a paper bag rising on the flow of heated air. French brothers Joseph-Michael and Jacques-?tienne Montgolfier built and flew a number of hot-air balloons starting in 1783 that carried a sheep, a duck, a rooster and eventually human passengers.

The First Powered Airship:?The French connection also inspired another big moment for flight. Charles Renard and Arthur C. Krebs, inventors and military officers in the French Army Corps of Engineers, built the first powered airship that could control its flight effectively by using a battery-powered electric motor and wooden propeller.

The Wright Brothers & the First Flight:?Brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright pioneered the working principles for modern aircraft by flying their Wright Flyer for just 12 seconds during a first test at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The flight of their fragile invention relied upon science and engineering ideas that eventually spawned aerial warfare, worldwide air travel and space exploration.

World's First Commercial Airline:?The first scheduled airline passengers didn't get peanuts and soft drinks, but they did get to fly between St. Petersburg and Tampa, Fla., in just 20 minutes ? far shorter than the many hours of travel required for a steamship, train or car. The St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line heralded a new way for everyone to fly despite lasting just four months after its Jan. 1, 1914, debut.

Charles Lindbergh & the First Solo Transatlantic Flight:?Flying across the Atlantic seemed like a job for either very brave or very foolish pilots, especially alone and in a single-engine aircraft such as the Spirit of St. Louis. That did not stop Charles Lindbergh from making the first transatlantic flight in 34 hours and changing the world's views on the possibilities of air travel.

Breaking the Sound Barrier:?Only bullets, cannon balls and Superman had broken the sound barrier before Chuck Yeager climbed into a U.S. Air Force experimental rocket-powered aircraft on Oct. 14, 1947. The Bell X-1 used four rocket engines and a shape modeled after a machine gun bullet to help Yeager break the sound barrier and set a new milestone for future aircraft.

The First Man in Space:?Yuri Gagarin had to face risky flight conditions and the scary unknowns of spaceflight to become the first human in space on April 12, 1961. His 108-minute orbit of the Earth aboard the Soviet Vostok 1 spacecraft opened the era of manned spaceflight and escalated the space race between the Soviet Union and the United States ? a race leading to the first manned moon mission.

Apollo 11: First Men on the Moon:?Two U.S. astronauts, Neil Armstrong and "Buzz" Aldrin, became worldwide celebrities when they climbed down their lunar module ladder and set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969. The space explorers left behind their footprints, part of their spacecraft and an American flag to symbolize humanity's first steps on an extraterrestrial surface.

Salyut 1: The First Space Station:?Two separate crews of Soviet cosmonauts suffered near-fatal accidents and death during their return trips from the Soviet Salyut 1, the world's first space station. But Salyut 1 still helped pioneer methods for living and working in space over long periods in its 175 days in space following launch in 1971.

Space Shuttle Launches New Era in Exploration:?Space shuttle Columbia launched on its first historic flight on April 12, 1981 ?20 years to the day after Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space. The iconic spacecraft and its four sister ships eventually carried more than 850 astronauts into space over three decades despite the twin tragedies of Challenger and Columbia.

Syrian regime claims gains in Aleppo, rebels deny

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian government forces mounted new ground attacks against rebel-controlled neighborhoods in Syria's commercial hub of Aleppo, the state media said Monday, but failed to dislodge the opposition from their strongholds, according to activists.

The Syrian army has massed its forces around Aleppo, where rebels hold several neighborhoods after a 10-day offensive, and has been pounding it with tanks and helicopter gunships. There have also been periodic incursions of government tanks but the rebels have held on to their gains.

This use of heavy weapons, particularly helicopters, is just another nail in President Bashar Assad's coffin, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said late Sunday during a stopover in Tunisia as he kicked off a Mideast tour expected to focus heavily on the unfolding crisis in Syria.

Already an estimated 200,000 civilians ? almost 10 percent of the population ? have fled the fighting in Aleppo, according to the U.N. official for humanitarian affairs, Valerie Amos, citing the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Syrian Red Crescent. Aleppo is Syria's largest city with around 3 million inhabitants.

Syrian state media reported late Sunday that the army had "purged" Aleppo's southwestern neighborhood of Salaheddine and inflicted "great losses" upon the rebels in one of the first districts they took control of in their bid to seize the city.

There was also a successful operation in Sukhour neighborhood, in the northeast of the city and another rebel stronghold, the state media said.

Activists, however, disputed these claims and just described another day of fierce shelling of certain areas, backed up by the occasional foray on the ground.

"They have tanks in nearby Hamdaniya and there is fighting, and there have been random bombardments of Salaheddine," said Mohammed Saeed, who is based in the embattled city.

While giving no indication that the Obama administration is contemplating military intervention, Panetta said it is increasingly clear that the Syrian crisis is deepening and that Assad is hastening his own demise.

"If they continue this kind of tragic attack on their own people ... I think it ultimately will be a nail in Assad's coffin," Panetta told reporters traveling with him from Washington. "His regime is coming to an end."

Assad's regime has been plagued by a string of defections, including three high ranking diplomats and several military commanders. On Monday, a Turkish official announced that a Syrian brigadier general who was deputy chief of police in Syria's Latakia region, had defected.

The general was among a group of 12 Syrian officers who crossed into Turkey late Sunday, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because of Turkish government rules. His defection raises the number of generals to have left for Turkey since the start of the 17-month-old uprising to 28.

But Syria's army remains mostly intact and still vastly outguns the rag-tag rebel army, which is armed for the most part with assault rifles, machine guns and doesn't have the heavy weapons necessary to effectively oppose tanks and helicopter gunships.

The government boosted its forces outside Aleppo and began an assault over the weekend to retake the commercial hub, bombarding rebel neighborhoods and leaving streets littered with rubble and empty apartment blocks with gaping smashed windows, according to videos of the city posted online in recent days.

Fleeing residents described to The Associated Press incessant shelling, shortages of food and gasoline and soaring black market prices for everyday staples.

"I am extremely concerned by the impact of shelling and use of tanks and other heavy weapons on people in Aleppo," Amos said in a statement from New York late Sunday. "Many people have sought temporary shelter in schools and other public buildings in safer areas. They urgently need food, mattresses and blankets, hygiene supplies and drinking water."

She added that while the fighting made getting to the needy very difficult, the U.N. agencies and the Red Crescent were continuing their efforts to deliver food, blankets and hygiene kits.

Beat-Up Chinese Paper Stocks May Be Poised To Rise

Beat-up shares in Chinese paper producers may be poised to rise in the second half of 2012, ?Northeastern Securities of Jilin said in a research report on Saturday.

Shares of leading suppliers such as Nine Dragons Paper, Lee & Man Paper, and Sun Paper? have tumbled in the past year on excess industry supplies and weak international demand, ?cutting into the fortunes of some of the region?s richest businesspeople.? (See related story here about Lee & Man).

Among the biggest losers, Shenzhen-traded Shandong Sun Paper sank to a three-year closing low of 5.03 yuan on Thursday, before edging up 0.01 yuan on Friday.? Sun?s chairman Li Hongxin ranked No. 157 on the 2011 Forbes China Rich List with wealth of $955 million yet today he?s worth only a little more than half that. (Click here for a link to the 2011 Forbes China Rich List.)

However, ?shares may be poised to rise, Northeastern Securities said. First-half?profit at another big industry supplier,? Shandong Chenming Paper, for instance, won?t be below 72 million yuan, or US$11 million, according to a projection by the company on July 12. Because actual first-quarter profit was 15 million yuan, that implies net income in the second quarter shouldn?t be any lower than 57 million yuan, almost quadruple the preceding three-month period. The company officially projected second-quarter net income would be in a range of 72-150 million yuan.

To be sure, that?s a big fall of 70-85% compared with a year ago.? But ?the light of dawn? may be on the horizon, Northeastern said.

US team could get tough test from France in opener

LONDON (AP) ? As the world watched the queen, David Beckham and what seemed like all of England take part in the Olympic opening ceremonies, Mike Krzyzewski stayed in.

Back at the U.S. team's hotel, Krzyzewski and his assistants studied tape of France.

Krzyzewski isn't taking any chances.

"To not prepare would be the ultimate sign of disrespect," Krzyzewski said, "and the biggest, poorest assumption that you could make."

It's gold time for the Americans, who open the 12-nation tournament Sunday against France, a squad led by San Antonio guard Tony Parker and featuring five other NBA players. The French are one of several teams that believe they have a legitimate chance of shocking the star-studded Americans.

"It's a big test for us," U.S. forward Carmelo Anthony said, lacing up his sneakers Saturday before practice at East London University. "We're going up against guys that we normally play on a night-to-night basis, and those countries have put them all together just like we have. And at the end of the day their main goal is to beat the United States.

"There's going to be some good battles."

France will only be the first. This isn't going to be some easy sightseeing stroll along the Thames for the American team before stepping onto the gold-medal stand. Spain, Argentina and Brazil are all talented enough to not only compete with the U.S., but potentially upset the world's No. 1 team.

That wasn't the case four years ago, when the U.S. steamrolled through the field, winning by at least 20 points in each of its first seven games before beating Spain 118-107 in the final. Krzyzewski, who guided the 2008 "Redeem Team" to gold, believes a potential road to gold could have some dangerous bumps.

"The overall 12 teams are more talented, more seasoned," he said. "Spain is just in the prime of their ? 28, 29 (years of age). Brazil is in that wheelhouse. I think Russia's really, really good. Obviously Argentina, everyone says they're older but their heart and talent has not gotten older, It's just gotten better.

"There's just more teams that feel that they have a chance to win the gold medal ? and medal ? than they did in '08."

Count the French among them.

They finished second to Spain at last year's European Championships, and maintain they won't be intimidated by the U.S. team's collection of All-Stars, MVPs and household names. France's players have no intention of being posterized on a dunk by LeBron James or Kobe Bryant the way 7-foot-2 countryman Frederic Weis was famously embarrassed by a soaring Vince Carter in the 2000 Sydney Games.

France, 0-4 against the U.S. in Olympic competition, isn't frightened.

"For us there is no fear factor because we play against them all the time," said Parker, who will wear goggles to protect his surgically repaired left eye. "We know they are really, really good. But it's not going to be like the other teams where they don't see them and it's like, 'Oh, wow, I'm playing against Kobe and LeBron.'"

Bryant likened France's offense to the one Parker runs with the Spurs. Everything starts with the ball in Parker's hands, so the U.S. team's challenge will be to make him give it up.

"Slow him down and surround him," Bryant said. "Keep bodies in front of him at all times."

Turiaf, who recently won an NBA title with James in Miami, said France's familiarity with the U.S. players will help ? to a point.

"If you look at the NBA game everyone knows each and every one of those players tendencies," he said. "Can they stop them? No. What you try to do is just give yourself the best chance in order to have some sort of success. I think all you can do is put yourself in position to disturb them as much as possible."

This U.S. team, comprised of five holdovers from the '08 squad, five from the 2010 world championship team and two newcomers, was loose and relaxed before Saturday's workout, a final tune-up before beginning the five-game preliminary round. Durant and Anthony playfully horsed around in the foul lane and Bryant smiled amusingly as photographers jockeyed for position like paparazzi trying to record his every move.

The mood will be decidedly different Sunday.

That's when everything change. That's when it matters.

"Everybody expects us to win gold," James said. "And that's what we're here for. Nothing else."

In recent days, Bryant, James and the other U.S. players have been careful not to get trapped into making comparisons to the Dream Team. Bryant recently caused a stir by saying the 2012 Olympians could beat the 1992 version that included Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.

Jordan called Bryant's comments "not one of the smarter things he ever could have done."

For now, the talk has quieted, the comparisons can wait. For this American team to be regarded among the others before them, there can only be one medal.

"The legacy will be determined if you win the gold or you don't," Krzyzewski said. "We're not talking about legacy everyday but it is. We're here to win a gold medal, and if we do less than that, then it will be a big loss for us."

America's uneasy Gulf allies adding to arsenals

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? While Iran's military loudly trumpets every new project or purported advance in hopes of rattling the U.S. and its Gulf Arab allies, the U.S. is quietly answering with an array of proposed arms sales across the region as part of a wider effort to counter Tehran.

In the past two months, the Defense Department has notified Congress of possible deals totaling more than $11.3 billion to Gulf states such as Qatar and Kuwait, which are seen as some of America's critical front-line partners in containing Iran and protecting oil shipping lanes.

The proposed sales ? including Patriot missile batteries and Apache attack helicopters ? are still modest compared with massive Gulf purchases such as Saudi Arabia's $60 billion package last year. That deal included more than 80 new F-15SA fighter jets, missiles, radar warning systems and other equipment.

But the recent flurry of expected sales from U.S. firms, approved by the Pentagon and outlined in notifications to Congress, underscores the growing emphasis among nervous Gulf states on seeking quick upgrades to existing firepower and defensive networks.

Gulf worries about possible military action against Iran have increased with diplomatic efforts making little headway in easing the showdown over Tehran's nuclear program, which the West and others fear could eventually develop atomic weapons. Iran says it only seeks reactors for energy and medical uses.

An Israeli newspaper, Haaretz, reported Sunday that National Security Adviser Tom Donilon briefed Israeli officials on possible U.S. attack plans if diplomacy and sanctions fail to pressure Tehran to scale back its nuclear enrichment program. A senior Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss confidential talks, denied the Haaretz report.

The news reports reflect the uncertainties in the region with negotiations nearly stalled and Iran trying to push back against deepening sanctions on its vital oil exports.

"There was a bit of a breather in the region when (nuclear) talks resumed," said Bruno Tertrais, senior researcher at the Foundation for Strategic Research in Paris. "That is quickly fading."

In its place: a sense of military adjustments moving at a faster pace.

Washington plans to keep at least 13,500 troops in Kuwait ? down slightly from the current 15,000 ? but with an expanded mission as a potential rapid-reaction force for the region. The Pentagon also has scores of warplanes and other assets across the Gulf, including air bases in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.

At sea, the U.S. Navy plans to lead maneuvers in September that include minesweeping drills ? a clear response to Iran's threats to block oil tankers from passing through the Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Gulf in retaliation for the tightening Western sanctions.

The U.S. is also boosting its Gulf flotilla, directed by the Navy's 5th Fleet in Bahrain. Among the additions: a floating assault base aboard the retrofitted USS Ponce and accelerated deployment of the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis to ensure two carriers are in the Gulf region at all times.

"We are seeing more and more bluster from the Iranian side and the U.S. and Gulf allies showing the Iranians they are a united front," said Theodore Karasik, a regional security expert at the Dubai-based Institute for Near East and Gulf Military Analysis. "The Gulf states are nervous. They show this nervousness by buying more weapons."

Among the proposed U.S. sales is a $4.2 billion package to Kuwait for 60 Patriot missiles and related systems to "strengthen its homeland defense and deter regional threats," the Defense Department said in a statement. Kuwait could also buy, pending congressional approval, a $49 million arsenal of 300 Hellfire II missiles, which can be launched from helicopters or drones.

For Qatar ? which hosts one of the Pentagon's command hubs ? the Defense Department is seeking clearance for a $6.6 billion air support upgrade that includes 24 AH-64D Apache attack helicopters, 12 Blackhawk helicopters and 22 Seahawk helicopters, with options to buy six more.

The Apaches would assist with "protection of key oil and infrastructure and platforms which are vital to U.S. and Western economic interests," the Defense Department said.

Oman, which shares control of Hormuz with Iran, is seeking an $86 million purchase that includes 55 Sidewinder missiles as part of plans to upgrade its F-16 fighter fleet.

For decades, the Gulf had looked mostly to Washington for its weapons, but European arms deals also appear on the rise.

In Berlin, German government spokesman Georg Streiter said Monday there has been an "expression of interest" by Qatar in about 200 Leopard II tanks. A similar Leopard tank deal with Saudi Arabia was reported last year by German media.

In May, Saudi Arabia signed a $3 billion deal with Britain for air force training planes apparently linked to a 2007 agreement to buy 72 Eurofighter Typhoon fighters.

The weapons requests also reinforce the toughening stance against Iran by main rival Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf Arab states. The six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council has repeatedly warned Tehran about "meddling" in Gulf affairs. Saudi Arabia and Qatar have taken a leading role in supporting Syrian rebels trying to topple Bashar Assad's regime, which is Iran's main Mideast ally.

Last week, a commander of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guards warned that "hated Arab" rivals could face repercussions for their efforts to bring down Assad.

Although the Gulf Arab states have no direct ties to Israel, any military strike on Iran by the Jewish state could require some degree of coordination, with Washington likely to play an intermediary role. Gulf military forces also could be quickly drawn into a wider conflict or a confrontation over the Strait of Hormuz, the passageway for one-fifth of the world's oil.

"Amid the standoff between Iran, Israel and the West, there's another side that is often overlooked," said Sami al-Faraj, director of the Kuwait Center for Strategic Studies. "It is the Gulf states. They are the ones caught in the middle."

Scientists confirm existence of vitamin 'deserts' in the ocean

Tuesday, July 24, 2012

Using a newly developed analytical technique, a team led by scientists at USC was the first to identify long-hypothesized vitamin B deficient zones in the ocean.

"This is another twist to what limits life in the ocean," said Sergio Sa?udo-Wilhelmy, professor of biological and earth sciences at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences and lead author on a paper about the vitamin-depleted zones that will appear in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on July 23.

B vitamins are organic compounds dissolved in the ocean and are important for living cells to function. Zones poor in B vitamins may inhibit the growth and proliferation of phytoplankton, which are tiny microorganisms at the base of the food chain in the ocean.

"An important result of our study is that the concentrations of the five major B vitamins vary independently and appear to have different sources and sink," said co-author David Karl, professor of oceanography and director of the Center for Microbial Oceanography: Research and Education (C-MORE) at the University of Hawaii. "This could lead to complex interactions among populations of microbes, from symbiosis to intense competition."

In addition to being food for the tiniest sea animals, phytoplankton also absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, an important process when levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels are the highest they have been in half a million years.

The team developed a new method of concentrating water samples and then analyzing them using a mass spectrometer, which identifies and measures the quantity of an unknown compound in a given sample by first ionizing and breaking-up the compound and then quantifying the fragmented ions or molecules produced. (Mass spectrometry is also used to identify steroid use in athletes' urine samples.)

In their PNAS article, the researchers are sharing their technique with their colleagues around the world to help advance related research.

"The most important thing is that everyone with the right equipment can do it," Sa?udo-Wilhelmy said.

Next, Sa?udo-Wilhelmy said he plans to investigate what causes varying amounts of B-vitamins in different regions of the ocean, and try to determine exactly how that affects phytoplankton blooms. This includes a comprehensive set of experiments in the North Pacific Ocean as part of C-MORE's ongoing Hawaii Ocean Experiment.

Periodically, phytoplankton experience population explosions known as "blooms." In the case of certain phytoplankton that produce toxins, these blooms become toxic, such as the so-called "red" tides. Temperature, sunlight and nutrients in the water all appear to influence these blooms, but the exact causes have yet to be pinned down. One hypothesis is that vitamins B7 and B12 may act as triggers.

"It's crazy that after 100 years of study, we still don't fully understand what controls different phytoplankton blooms in the ocean," Sa?udo-Wilhelmy said.

U.N. approves 30-day extension for Syria monitors

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The U.N. Security Council voted unanimously on Friday to briefly extend a monitoring mission in Syria for 30 days, keeping alive a key part of international envoy Kofi Annan's faltering plan to end the 16-month conflict that has killed thousands of people.

Despite deep divisions over how to deal with the crisis in Syria, the Security Council backed Annan's peace plan and agreed in April to deploy 300 unarmed observers for an initial 90 days to help implement his six-point strategy to end the fighting.

But the 15-member council has been paralyzed when it comes to taking stronger action - including threatening sanctions - against Damascus. Russia and China have blocked three Western-backed attempts to pressure Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and end the conflict that began as peaceful pro-democracy protests.

U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, said on Friday the council has hit a "substantive dead end" on Syria and that Washington was looking outside the world body for ways to tackle the crisis. She described Friday's resolution to extend the U.N. Syria mission, known as UNSMIS, as simply an exit plan.

With little progress made in the five months since Annan was appointed by the United Nations and the African Union to try to end the Syria crisis, the former U.N. secretary-general had asked the Security Council last week to back up his plan with "clear consequences" for non-compliance by both sides.

He voiced his disappointment with Security Council on Thursday, saying it had failed to take "strong and concerted action" on Syria after Russia and China vetoed a resolution that threatened Damascus with sanctions. A spokesman for Annan declined to comment on the mission's extension on Friday.

Russia and China support each other on the Security Council to protect their respective allies from interference. Russia is an ally and major arms supplier to Syria, which is also home to Moscow's only naval base outside the former Soviet Union.

"We hope that the double veto yesterday will not put the Annan plan in peril," Germany's U.N. ambassador, Peter Wittig, said after Friday's vote. "It is still the basis for all our efforts to find a diplomatic, political solution to the crisis."

"With the extension, the mission has another chance - maybe the last chance - to monitor the Annan plan, despite grave risks on the ground," he said.

CAVEATS ON FURTHER RENEWAL

Annan's plan calls for an end to violence, a Syrian-led political process, access for aid, the release of arbitrarily detained people, freedom of movement for journalists and the freedom to protest peacefully. The U.N. monitoring mission is crucial to helping implement the plan.

Friday's resolution says the council would consider a further extension to the mission after 30 days only if the United Nations "confirms the cessation of the use of heavy weapons and a reduction in the level of violence by all sides sufficient" to allow the U.N. mission in Syria to operate.

The mission's 300 unarmed observers, whose role has been to monitor a failed April 12 ceasefire in Syria brokered by Annan, suspended their activity on June 16 because of increased risk from rising violence. There are also some 100 civilian staff working on a political solution and monitoring rights problems.

Major General Robert Mood, head of the U.N. monitoring mission, left Damascus on Thursday. The mission's mandate had been due to expire at midnight EDT Friday (0400 GMT Saturday).

A Western diplomat said it is understood that Assad called Mood after a bomb attack in Damascus on Wednesday killed members of Assad's inner circle. Assad told Mood that he would implement the Annan plan if Mood could get the rebels to stop their attacks. Annan and Mood were not available to comment.

Assad's forces have killed more than 15,000 people since a crackdown on pro-democracy protesters began in March 2011, some Western leaders say. Damascus says rebels have killed several thousand of its security forces.

Syrian government forces fought to recapture border posts and parts of Damascus from rebels on Friday, seeking to take back the initiative following Wednesday's bombing.

RIGHT TRACK

Russia and China agreed to the resolution to extend the U.N. mission on Friday after it was broadened at the last minute to require both government forces and rebel fighters to take steps to halt the violence.

"I'm pleased ... its requirements are addressed to all sides in Syria," Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin told reporters. He said the Western-backed resolution he vetoed on Thursday was "loaded with one-sided political requirements."

Britain's U.N. Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant described the new resolution as a last chance for the U.N. mission in Syria.

"If over the next 30 days there is a change in that dynamic and those conditions are met then of course the Security Council, on a recommendation by the secretary-general, will look again at the future of UNSMIS," Lyall Grant told reporters.

"But if the situation does not change then obviously UNSMIS will be withdrawn after 30 days," he said.

The United States has said it will turn to alternatives such as the "Friends of Syria" grouping of allied countries to find ways to pressure Assad after the Security Council's failure to set consequences for Syria's violations of Annan's plan.

But with key allies such as Britain pushing for the brief extension of the U.N. Syria mission, the United States withheld its veto on Friday to avoid being seen as torpedoing one of the last diplomatic initiatives under way to address the crisis.

"We will continue our political support to the opposition, our non-lethal assistance to the opposition. We will strengthen and intensify our sanctions ... We will increase the amount of humanitarian assistance we provide," Rice told reporters.

China's U.N. Ambassador Li Baodong said on Friday that Beijing believed it was important for Annan to continue his mediation efforts and that he was "very happy to see that the council has come back to the right track."

"The future of Syria must be determined by the people in Syria and the Syrian issues must be resolved peacefully and through peaceful means, that's why Kofi Annan's mediation is very important and we should give him support," Li said.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has recommended shifting the emphasis of the work of the UNSMIS from monitoring the nonexistent truce to pursuing a political solution. Diplomats said only half of the 300 unarmed observers would be needed for Ban's suggested shift in focus. The rest would return to their home countries, but be ready to redeploy at short notice.

Liu Xiang to be ready for Olympics, coach says

Sports

Source: Xinhua??|?? 2012-7-15??|?? ??ONLINE EDITION

Liu Xiang's back injury which forced him out of last night's London Diamond League final will not affect his chance of winning at the Olympic Games in three weeks time, his coach Sun Haiping said in London yesterday.

"It's just a slight problem. Liu Xiang felt a little uncomfortable in his back after the heat round. We decided to pull out of the finals just for the sake of caution," Sun said, adding that after a night's rest Liu has felt very well.

"Liu Xiang could have finished the race if we wanted him to. But we thought that it was unnecessary in this event," Sun said.

"He will be sure to fight to the end in the Olympic Games," he added.

To avoid the wet and cold English weather, Liu and his team is reportedly to have left England for training. But Sun declined to reveal where they will be going.

Liu had cruised into the 110m hurdles final after winning his heat in 13.27 seconds but failed to take his place on the start line for the final for the injury.

Merritt defied the cool, overcast conditions to equal his own season's fastest time of 12.93 seconds. Richardson was second in 13.06 and another American Ryan Wilson third in 13.18.

"I will be back for the Olympic Games," Liu told Chinese reporters before boarding a coach for the Heathrow Airport.

The men's 110m hurdles at the Olympic Games will be held on August 7 and the gold medal be decided on August 8.

[Relationship Management]~You & I? ? All in the mind?

You and I, in this beautiful world?
Green grass, blue skies?
In this beautiful world?
You and I, winding lanes as streams go by?
You and I, in this beautiful world.

Do you remember this theme song of a telecom major and as to what did it depict?
The relation between the little boy and the dog (a pug) metaphorically meant to convey that if you chose their network, it followed you wherever you went. It showcased how they were always there for their customer, no matter where she/he was. And boy, did they manage to hold our attention by maintaining this pug-love relationship with a lot many of us? This could be termed as a cute form of customer relationship management.
Of course, you are expected to pay the bill that?s generated! ;)

Well, I?m going to touch base on the topic ? Relationship Management ? in the simplest manner possible, for I?m not the one who likes to date Ms. Jargons! ;)
When we say ?Relationship Management? in general, it could mean a relation that is managed/maintained between any two parties, be it one-on-one or one-to-many or many-to-many! However, if we take a keen look into our day to day lives, we?ll be surprised by how we tend to spend quality time over managing relationships?yes all of us, You and I.

On a typical (week) day, you tend to deal with various forms of relationship management.
The day begins with how our vendor relationship is, say with your paperboy & milkman! The going is good till you get them delivered daily and in turn they?d get paid on time.
We reach our office and personally, the whole day is all about how your boss likes you and how you like your job ? and vice versa. Professional relationship is the toughest for it?s of multi-dimensional nature. You have one boss, but you are not the only one reporting to your boss. Your affection is one way while your boss?s affection is routed/divided among his several of his subordinates. Expectations/Egos/Peer-competition can prove to be the most persistent of challenges/hurdles.
How you maintain the relationship with your client/customer, on behalf of your company, tells you about how good you are at managing customer relationship! And most importantly, since it involves a team effort to maintain a customer relationship, there needs to be some vested interest in maintaining status quo among the team members.
Personal relationship management is kind of round-the-clock management. Be it with your parents, spouse, kids, friends or relatives ? it is a continuous & non-stop process, yes 24/7.

If we consider friendship, it is more of a time-based cycle. Not every friendship is an ever-lasting affair unless sincere efforts are put into maintaining them. Equal efforts are needed from both individuals involved to maintain it long and healthy. Off-late, social networks help you in kind of sealing the deal. They bring together long-lost friends who are separated not just by boundaries but also by their ever-evolving thought-process and like-mindedness.
Maintaining relationships on a social platform is not everyone?s cup of tea and it requires genuine efforts to be put along the lines (and ?likes?! ;) ).
While existing friendships get stronger when you maintain a parallel friendship track through your online connect, it has become much easier to form and maintain newer (or even long lost) bonds as well. More the links to a connection, the better, i.e., more the common friends, stronger will be the bonding (provided it?s interactive).

Apart from social networks such as Facebook, Google+, or the erstwhile Orkut, there are other platforms such as our own blog world (C2blogs) which provide opportunities to create and maintain relationships among the like-minded individuals.
Take for instance, the case of 2 bloggers on our C2blogs platform. By reading, commenting, ?like?ing and linking each other?s posts, there is an unsaid social kind of relationship that tends to form and over a period of time, a strong bond is maintained among the two. This is a case of one-on-one relationship. When a blogger happens to hold on to her/his readers by getting them to follow her/his blog, it creates a case of one-to-many relationship. This is similar to repeat-customers in a business relationship, where at the end of a contract period, the customer prefers to renew the contract with the same vendor rather than open up a fresh bidding process.
These social relationships can help you grow as an individual, as a person and possibly even in terms of work/career growth. If not for a direct solution, at least you?d get options in hand! :D

It?s like you?re always stuck in second gear,
Well, it hasn?t been your day, your week, your month, or even your year.
But, I?ll be there for you, when the rain starts to pour.
I?ll be there for you, like I?ve been there before.
I?ll be there for you, cause you?re there for me too.

JPMorgan profit drops on 'Whale' of a loss

It was a whopping loss from a whale of a trade, but it barely dinged JPMorgan Chase?s profit in the second quarter.

The largest U.S. bank by assets, JPMorgan reported?lower?profit in the second quarter Friday after recording a trading loss of $4.4 billion because of a failed hedging strategy undertaken by a trader in its?London office nicknamed??The London Whale? because of the size of the trading positions he took.

Doug Braunstein, JPMorgan?s chief financial officer, told analysts on a conference call Friday morning that the year-to-date losses from the botched trade amount to $5.8 billion. The losses could increase by another $1.7 billion in the worst case scenario, the bank said.

The bank lost money on bad derivatives trades made by its Chief Investment Office in London, which manages risk for the overall bank and invests excess deposits. The losses were isolated to the CIO group and it is no longer betting on credit derivatives, JPMorgan said. Another group will manage what is left of the trades.

Executive Mike Cavanagh, appointed to oversee the bank?s response to the multi-billion dollar trading loss, said two years? worth of compensation has been taken back from managers in London with direct responsibility for the botched trade.

Some individuals have left the firm, while others have been reassigned, he added. Three traders involved in the disastrous trade, including Bruno Iksil, the ?London Whale,? have left the bank, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

JPMorgan?s CEO Jamie Dimon said Ina Drew, the now-retired chief investment officer who oversaw the London office where the bank's failed trade originated, has offered to give up a significant amount of her compensation, equivalent to the maximum amount that the firm can ?claw back? from an individual -- two years? worth of total compensation, stock and options.

Claw backs are efforts to recover compensation paid to employees whose performance was later found to have harmed the company and shareholders.

The trading losses in London have been a black eye for Dimon, who won praise and respect for keeping his bank consistently profitable during the financial crisis.

JPMorgan's disclosure about traders misstating the value of their positions was the first indication that the problems with the company's bad trades may have extended beyond bad judgment about markets.

?We are not proud of this moment, but we are proud of this company,? Dimon said on the conference call, calling the big losses from the trade ?an isolated event? that had ?rocked the company to the core? and from which JPMorgan has ?learned a lot.?

Still, Dimon also defended the bank, reminding analysts that it has continued to grow in the financial crisis.

?We?ll never say we?ll never make a mistake [?] we operate in a risk business,? he said.

Janet Tavakoli, president of Tavakoli Structured Finance, a consulting firm, said Dimon has demonstrated incompetence in his role as CEO and should be removed.

?I am making an enemy here when I say something like this, but the Fed should replace Jaime Dimon,? she said. ?They should replace him for utter failure of corporate governance and telling the truth too slowly.?

On the call, JPMorgan executives fielded questions about a rate-fixing scandal that saw the U.K.?s Barclays Bank pay $453 million to regulators in the U.K and the U.S. in late June.

Barclays was accused of trying to influence LIBOR, or the London interbank offered rate -- a benchmark interest rate that affects the price at which consumers and companies across the world borrow funds.

A handful of other banks are said to be under scrutiny, including JPMorgan, Citigroup, HSBC, Deutsche Bank and the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Dimon refused to get into specifics about the investigation, but said the bank is ?totally open with regulators,? and added that he has ?no special insight? into how the scandal may change risks in the banking sector.

Economists and analysts predict the LIBOR scandal could be one of the most expensive to hit the banking sector since the financial crisis, engulfing more multinational banks with fines that dwarf the one handed to Barclays and further eroding investor confidence in the banking sector.

JPMorgan's overall net income was $4.96 billion, or $1.21 a share, compared with $5.43 billion, or $1.27 a share, a year earlier.

Results for both periods included special items. Analysts surveyed by financial data provider Factset expected 76 cents per share.

The derivative loss after taxes reduced earnings per share by 69 cents, the company said.

JPMorgan made more mortgage loans in the second quarter, which helped results. Because it is experiencing fewer defaults and delinquencies than it expected, the bank reduced the amount of money it had previously set aside to cover bad loans. That reduction boosted profit by $2.1 billion, before taxes.

JPMorgan expects to file new, restated first quarter results in the coming weeks. The bank found material problems with its financial controls during the period.

Friday's financial report came three months to the day after Dimon told stock analysts that news reports about Iksil and looming losses in London were a ?tempest in a teapot.?

That remark, which Dimon told Congress last month was ?dead wrong,? added to the damage the loss has done to his reputation and his argument that his bank is not too big to be managed safely.

A host of international regulators and agencies are already probing the trading mishap.
