Romney homestretch game plan: jobs, jobs, jobs

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? His convention behind him, Mitt Romney enters the campaign homestretch with a singular goal: convince Americans disappointed with President Barack Obama that the Democrat is to blame for the stagnant economy and that only he can fix it.

"You know there's something wrong with the kind of job he's done as president when the best feeling you had, was the day you voted for him," Romney said, accepting the Republican nomination that eluded him four years ago.

It was the start of a closing argument that aides say will be singularly focused on jobs ? the issue on the top of voters' minds ? between now and Nov. 6, as the GOP challenger looks to woo voters who put their faith into Obama four years ago but have soured on him with unemployment stuck at 8.3 percent and the economy sputtering.

Polls show a close race nationally and in key states, ensuring that the hard-hitting, personal attack-filled campaign of the summer will continue this fall, if not escalate.

Romney's challenges are great. Most voters say they like Obama better than Romney, who struggles to connect with voters. Most also think the president will win a second term.

Romney has fewer paths than Obama as he looks to cobble together victories in enough states to win the 270 electoral votes needed to become president. And his image has been dented after a barrage of negative ads by Obama and his allies that cast the Republican as a heartless job-killing corporate titan.

Still, Romney has a slight edge in surveys over Obama on the question of who would better handle the economy. Between his campaign and allied super political action committees, Romney also is expected to have a significant financial advantage over the president and his backers. And he also has this going for him: Most Americans say the country is going in the wrong direction under Obama.

With polls showing close races or Obama with a slight edge in key battleground states, Romney's team is weighing whether to try to expand the playing field. They're considering pouring money into three industrial states Democrats have long won but where Republicans sense opportunity: Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Doing so would force Obama to spend money defending his home turf while potentially giving Romney more electoral-vote paths to the White House.

In the coming weeks, Romney will focus on narrowing Obama's advantage with women, arguably the most critical constituency this fall, and energizing white voters who lean more heavily toward the Republican challenger than the Democratic incumbent. And all the while, he'll focus on those who can tip the balance in a close race.

"The people who are really open to voting for me, that I need to get to vote for me to win the presidency are independents and Democrats who've been disappointed by the last four years," Romney told CBS News in an interview this week.

To get them solidly in his camp, Romney will emphasize anew his record in private business as he looks to take advantage of the edge he has on handling the economy.

His advisers say they remain convinced that Romney's successful career at private equity firm Bain Capital holds the key to the White House despite Obama's efforts to undercut the key rationale for Romney's candidacy.

Obama has spent months ? and millions ? working to sully those credentials by criticizing Romney over his Swiss bank account, his former company's instances of outsourcing jobs and his refusal to release more than two years' worth of his own tax returns. The Democrats claim Romney would govern with a profit-at-any-cost mentality that would benefit the wealthy and hurt the middle class.

While the emphasis will be on the economy and jobs, Romney's team will try to make his case by seizing on related issues like welfare reform and entitlement programs as he looks to pick off support from his target demographic groups.

He will rely on running mate Paul Ryan to help him make the case as the primary critic of Obama. It was a role on display Wednesday when the Wisconsin congressman stood at the convention podium. Ryan also brings Midwestern appeal.

To show his more personal side, Romney will turn even more to his wife, Ann.

A warm, charismatic figure, Mrs. Romney has stepped up her campaigning this week and drew rave reviews with her convention speech Tuesday. Aides say she'll be on the road as often as possible, partly because the candidate tends to be more relaxed and confident when she's around. One concern is her health. She suffers from multiple sclerosis, and too much flying or exhaustion can hamper her for days if it's not managed.

To sell himself this fall, Romney has turned to a group of admakers from Hollywood and Madison Avenue, collectively dubbed "Mitt's Mad Men" inside the campaign.

Starting Friday, he'll be able to tap his huge stockpile of general election cash, a chunk of the $177 million he had on hand as August began. Obama's campaign and party had $127 million available, according to the most recent public data.

Romney's cash will be spent primarily on television advertising and get-out-the-vote operations in the most competitive swing-voting states: Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Nevada, Colorado and New Hampshire. He's also targeting North Carolina. And he's looking at making a more aggressive play for Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, where outside groups have been on the air for weeks.

Romney will have only a few more opportunities to send a crystalized message to Americans still questioning whether he has what it takes to be president.

To that end, the stakes are high for a trio of October debates.

He's already been preparing for them by reading heavy briefing books. His advisers view these face-to-face meetings with Obama as the best opportunity for Romney to demonstrate just how he stacks up against the president.

Creative D5 Air Airplay speaker hits IFA, readies itself for a late-September release

Image

There's nothing quite like a behind closed doors briefing at a busy tradeshow like IFA. Creative wasn't quite ready to take its new D5 Air out onto the showroom floor just yet, but the company did let us take a sneak peak at the thing in a small testing room room. As the name implies, this sound bar is an AirPlay speaker, so you can use it with devices that utilize Apple's proprietary streaming technology. We got a quick demo of the thing via an iPhone, and it sounded nice and loud.

The player has a small, square screen on the front that is "visible from any part of the room," according to the company, so you can sit on your couch and still see what's going on, while controlling it via your Apple device or the included remote control. Aesthetically, the single speaker system looks like exactly what you'd expect from Creative, all black, with the vast majority of the rectangle monopolize by mesh and shiny plastic ends on either side. There's also a black line with illuminated white dots that runs down its center, up to the iPhone / iPod dock on its top.

The D5 Air has a bass port built into the back and is constructed from a monocoque exoskeleton to help minimize vibration. It'll run you $399 when it starts shipping at the end of September.

Assad says more time needed to win Syria battle

President Bashar al-Assad said his forces need more time to win the battle in Syria and scoffed at the idea of creating buffer zones for displaced people, as fighting raged nationwide on Wednesday.

Assad's statements, in an interview with pro-regime Addounia channel, came after a car bomb rocked a funeral in a Damascus suburb on Tuesday, killing 27 people.

"I can summarise in one phrase: we are progressing, the situation on the ground is better but we have not yet won -- this will take more time," Assad said in the interview with the private channel.

He also rejected an idea being championed by Turkey of creating buffer zones within Syria to receive those displaced by the conflict so they do not flood across the borders into neighbouring countries.

"Talk of buffer zones firstly is not on the table and secondly it is an unrealistic idea by hostile countries and the enemies of Syria," he said.

Assad also accused "the Turkish state of bearing a direct responsibility for the spilling of blood inside Syria."

French President Francois Hollande said on Monday France was working with its partners on the possible establishment of such buffer zones.

But his foreign minister, Laurent Fabius, admitted on Wednesday implementing these would be "very complicated" and require the imposition of partial no-fly zones.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has said Turkey is in talks with the United Nations on ways to shelter thousands of refugees on Syrian soil.

"We expect the United Nations to step in for the protection of refugees inside Syria and if possible housing them in camps there," Davutoglu was quoted as saying by Turkey's Anatolia news agency.

He was speaking before leaving for New York to attend UN Security Council meeting on refugees on Thursday.

Human Rights Watch urged Syria's neighbours to keep their borders open to refugees, but Jordan said it would send home Syrians who attacked and injured more than 20 police in clashes at the Zaatari refugee camp near the border on Tuesday.

Assad on Wednesday also mocked regime defectors, saying their departure amounted to a "self-cleansing of the government firstly and the country generally."

Syria's government has been rattled by several high-profile defections as the conflict has escalated, including former premier Riad Hijab and prominent General Manaf Tlass, a childhood friend of Assad.

"Despite several mistakes, there is a strong bond" between the regime and the Syrian people, Assad insisted, boasting the support of the majority of the population.

"What is happening is neither a revolution nor a Spring, it is about terrorist acts in every sense of the term," he said.

--- Battle for Taftanaz airport ---

-----------------------------------

Syrian rebels, meanwhile, said they destroyed five helicopters in a raid on a military airport between the northern cities of Aleppo and Idlib on Wednesday, while state television said the attack was repelled.

Abu Mossab, a rebel who said he took part in the attack, told AFP via Skype that rebels shelled Taftanaz military airport with two tanks captured from the army and destroyed five helicopters.

"We destroyed five helicopters as well as buildings in the airport," Abu Mossab said, although it remained in army hands after the raid in which the rebels lost two men before withdrawing.

State television said the military repelled the attack with the airport suffering "no material damage."

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights earlier reported fierce fighting near the airport and helicopter raids on the nearby town of Taftanaz.

In Damascus, activists reported a third straight day of army attacks on rebel strongholds in the eastern outer belt of the city, collectively referred to as East Ghuta.

State media said "terrorist mercenaries" had killed four civilians in Zamalka, using its term for rebels fighting government forces since the anti-regime uprising broke out in March 2011.

They had "murdered citizens, including women and men, under the eyes of inhabitants... The terrorists then gathered the bodies of the victims and put them in a mosque in Qadi Askar" district, the SANA news agency said.

It said the assailants had planned to blow up the mosque and then blame the attack on government forces.

State-run newspaper Tishrin said Tuesday's car bombing of a funeral in Damascus was an indication that the "terrorist" groups have reached "a very advanced stage of despair and bankruptcy."

The bombing hit Jaramana, a mainly Druze and Christian town on the southeastern outskirts of Damascus that the Observatory described as generally supportive of Assad's government.

Russia on Wednesday called for an impartial investigation into the latest "barbaric" violence in and around Damascus.

"We insist on a meticulous and impartial investigation into the circumstances of the latest tragic events" using the resources of the United Nations' newly opened office in Damascus, the Russian foreign ministry said.

It singled out the car bomb and the discovery of several hundred bodies near the Damascus suburb of Daraya on Sunday that the rebels charge was the result of a massacre by regime forces.

In violence nationwide on Wednesday, at least 101 people were killed, including 56 civilians, according to the Observatory, which says more than 25,000 people have been killed in the 17-month-long revolt.

Meanwhile, UN chief Ban Ki-moon held talks in Tehran with Iran's leaders including on the Syria conflict.

After meeting parliament speaker Ali Larijani, Iran's parliamentary news website quoted Ban as saying: "Iran can play an important role in solving the Syrian crisis peacefully."

Iran, the chief ally of Syria's regime, accuses the United States, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar of sustaining the revolt in Syria.

A potentially powerful new approach for limiting health care costs which account for almost $1 out of every $5 spent in the U.S. each year is the topic of the feature story in this week's edition of Chemical & Enginering News (C&EN), the weekly news magazine of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the world's largest scientific society.

C&EN Senior Correspondent Marc S. Reisch explains that one until-now neglected way to reign in health care spending involves providing patients and doctors with better diagnostic tests. Such tests could save money by providing greater certainty that patients get the right treatment from Day One, reducing the use of unnecessary procedures, prescriptions and hospital stays.

Reisch describes how scientific instrument makers, which for years have enabled research on new drugs, increasingly see a role for themselves in diagnostics used by physicians to help decide which drugs to prescribe to patients. Instrument makers like Thermo Fisher Scientific, Agilent Technologies and Life Technologies have spent more than $14 billion over the last year buying diagnostics makers. Reisch reports that these next-generation diagnostic tests can identify a specific disease or indicate whether a chemotherapy regimen is working. That information can help doctors make better decisions about how to treat a patient.

Samsung reveals Galaxy Note II

23 hrs.

Fresh off a legal battle with Apple, Samsung is announcing a new version of the Galaxy Note, an offbeat, oversized smartphone that's become a surprise hit.

Samsung, the world's largest maker of phones, is revealing the Galaxy Note II at a trade show in Berlin. The 5.5-inch screen is narrower but longer than on the first version. The processor is faster, and the software has been further adapted for the included stylus ? the phone's signature feature.

While Apple has been releasing a new smartphone model each year, Samsung makes several to target different types of customers. That includes low-end phones for price-conscious customers. As a result, Samsung has been selling more smartphones than Apple this year.

The Note runs on Google's Android operating system but isn't among the phones that Apple is asking a judge to ban from the U.S., after a jury in California ruled last week that some of Samsung's Android phones violated Apple patents. The jury awarded Apple $1 billion in damages in a high-profile case that could force Samsung and other Android phone makers to rethink their designs.

The Note is designed to work well with a stylus for jotting notes and drawing on a screen, while styluses for other devices tend to be an afterthought. The Note's large screen also makes the phone more like a tablet and more suitable for playing games and consuming content. Samsung started selling a tablet version of the Note this month.

Samsung says it has shipped 10 million first-generation Galaxy Notes in one year.

Samsung says the new phone will go on sale in Europe and Asia in October. It did not say when it would launch with a U.S. carrier.

Typhoon pounds South Korea, smashes ships; 9 dead

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? A powerful typhoon pounded South Korea with strong winds and heavy rain Tuesday, killing nine and churning up rough seas that smashed two Chinese fishing ships into rocks and forced the coast guard to perform a daring rescue of survivors.

Rescuers saved 12 fishermen and searched for 10 still missing from the ships that hit rocks off South Korea's southern Jeju island. Five fishermen were killed, officials said.

Separately, at least four other people died as Typhoon Bolaven knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of South Koreans, canceled flights and temporarily halted joint war games by U.S. and South Korean military forces.

North Korea, which is still struggling to rebuild from massive floods and a devastating drought before that, was next in the typhoon's path. Heavy rain and strong winds hit many parts of the country Tuesday, a day that was supposed to be a North Korean celebration of its young people.

The typhoon knocked down hundreds of trees, destroyed power cables and caused blackouts in the western cities of Kaesong and Haeju, the North's official Korean Central News Agency said. It said damage was expected to grow as the typhoon moves across the country.

Off South Korea's Jeju island, dangerous waves kept rescue vessels from approaching the wrecked fishing ships. The coast guard used a special gun to shoot rope to one ship so officers could pull themselves over and bring the fishermen back to shore, coast guard spokesman Ko Chang-keon said.

Eighteen fishermen survived. The coast guard rescued 12, and the others swam or were washed ashore.

South Korea issued a storm warning for the capital, Seoul, as Bolaven battered the country's south and west, knocking over street lights and church spires and ripping signs from stores. A large container box crushed an apartment janitor to death, a woman fell to her death from a rooftop where she kept dried red peppers and another person died after bricks hit a house, according to disaster and fire officials. An 80-year-old man died after a small makeshift building fell on him, officials said.

Strong wind gusts left Seoul streets covered with leaves, garbage and branches. More than 15,000 schools canceled classes, and businesses and homes taped windows or pasted the glass with wet newspapers to keep them from shattering.

About 1.7 million South Korean homes and businesses lost power, the National Emergency Management Agency said, though all but about 200,000 had electricity restored by Tuesday night.

More than 80 families were left homeless because of floods or storm damage. Nearly 200 flights were canceled, 860 hectares (2,130 acres) of farmland were flooded and 32 ships were damaged, the agency said in a statement.

In Pyongyang, North Korea's capital, Associated Press cameras captured cars splashing through slightly flooded streets, spraying people on crowded sidewalks who scrambled to avoid the water. Residents appeared to be going about their daily lives, though many wore rain boots and jackets, angling their umbrellas to fight the wind and rain.

The bad weather came on North Korea's first Youth Day since new leader Kim Jong Un took over in December.

Big rainstorms often mean catastrophe in the North because of poor drainage, deforestation and decrepit infrastructure. North Korea is still trying to help people with food, shelter, health care and clean water after heavy flooding in July, according to a recent United Nations situation report. More than 170 died nationwide, and tens of thousands of homes were destroyed in the floods, according to official North Korean accounts.

Many flood victims still live in tents with limited access to water and other basic facilities, the U.N. report said, and there is worry about increased malnutrition in coming weeks. Two South Korean aid groups had been scheduled to visit the North Korean city of Kaesong for talks Wednesday on flood aid, but the North on Tuesday canceled the meeting, according to aid group officials. One of the groups said the North cited strained ties between the two Koreas.

Weather officials had warned that Bolaven would be the strongest typhoon to hit the region in several years, but its gusts weren't as powerful as predicted.

The typhoon hit the southern Japanese island of Okinawa on Monday, injuring four people but doing less damage than feared before moving off to sea. More than 75,000 households lost power.

Farther south, another typhoon, Tembin, doubled back and hit Taiwan three days after drenching the same region before blowing out to sea. Fierce winds and rain toppled coconut trees in the beach resort town of Hengchun.

In Manila, the Philippine weather agency reissued typhoon warnings to residents and fishermen for Tembin, which blew out of the archipelago over the weekend. Fishing boats in the north were urged not to venture out to sea while larger ships were warned of possible big waves and heavy rains.

Survivor of flesh-eating disease to visit 'Katie'

(AP) ? Katie Couric says a guest on her upcoming talk show will be Aimee Copeland, the Georgia woman who survived a rare flesh-eating disease.

Copeland, a 24-year-old grad student, will be interviewed on Couric's new show, "Katie," airing Sept. 11. The show announced Tuesday that with the help of her prosthetics, Copeland will walk onto the stage.

Copeland contracted the rare infection in May after falling from a zip line and gashing her leg. Doctors had to amputate both hands, her left leg and right foot. She returned home last week after three months in the hospital and a rehabilitation clinic.

Still facing a rigorous recovery process, Copeland will discuss her story of survival.

Airing weekdays, the syndicated "Katie" premieres Sept. 10, when its guests will include Jessica Simpson and Sheryl Crow.

Launch of 3rd Internet and Social Media Use in Shipping survey ...

TAKE OUR 2012 SURVEY NOW

It gives us great pleasure to announce that our 3rd Internet and Social Media survey is now live and can be completed online by clicking here.

Our annual survey ? first launched at our user event in 2010 ? has grown into a real barometer of digital use in the maritime industry with the aim of building an understanding of how trends in business-to-business e-commerce and social media are impacting the maritime sector.

The results of last year?s survey showed a quickening of observable trends in internet use, with many respondents adopting new tools and working methods to adapt to challenging shipping market conditions.

The 2011 survey?s key findings were as follows:

? Many more marine buyers and suppliers are using internet to source and transact, with significant (15%) increase in usage between 2010 and 2011;

? Users consider peer reviews on suppliers and the selection of trusted websites as the two most important factors in influencing a purchasing decision from an internet provider;

? Respondents said faster transaction speed was greatest benefit of doing business over internet;

? The use of social media applications is here to stay. In the biggest shift since 2010, the survey found that 75% of respondents said they would increase their use of social media in a business context;

? Over 50% of respondents said they use the mobile internet or a mobile application every day.

The survey aims to? collect opinions both online and offline from purchasing managers and suppliers from the world?s leading shipowners, managers and suppliers and we will be conducting our survey on our booths at both the upcoming IMPA and SMM exhibitions.

For this year?s survey we have also added further questions about social media usage and its development as there has been a marked increase in the use of these platforms by shipping companies over the last 12 months.

The NEW survey can be found HERE and? will only take three minutes of your time? and we thank you in advance for your participation.

Casey Anthony probation ending, but legal woes not over

(Reb Huber/AP Images)Casey Anthony's one-year probation sentence for check fraud ends this week, giving her the freedom to go wherever she pleases.

"As of Friday, Aug. 24 at 12 a.m., nobody will be able to tell her where to be," Anthony's attorney Charles Greene told ABCNews.com.

"She's complied with all the terms of her probation and she's looking forward to having her freedom to move forward because, even though she's been out of jail for the last year, she's essentially still been in prison by the requirement that she remains in one location," Greene said.

Anthony, 26, was acquitted last summer of killing her 2-year-old daughter Caylee Anthony.

After Anthony's acquittal, Florida Judge Belvin Perry ordered her to serve one year of probation for a 2010 check fraud conviction. Prior to her first degree murder trial, Anthony pleaded guilty to stealing checks from her best friend Amy Huizenga during the time that Caylee was missing.

Since then, Anthony has been serving her probation from an undisclosed Florida location. She has resurfaced a few times over the past year via a leaked video diary and a telephone conversation with Piers Morgan, but has otherwise succeeded in disappearing from the public eye.

Anthony has been unemployed for the past year, according to her monthly probation reports, so it is unclear where any money she might use comes from. She has not published a book or sold her story in any known capacity.

Greene hopes that one day she will tell her own story.

"There's things she wants to say, but they need to be on her time, her terms, her conditions," he said. "I hope that one day she says more."

Her attorney still fears for the safety of Anthony, once considered the most hated woman in America after a Florida jury said the prosecution failed to prove that she killed her daughter. During the months that Caylee was missing, Anthony was depicted as a party girl in bars and getting a tattoo that proclaimed "Bella Vita."

"People ranging from the media to people with lawsuits against her to people with just a fantastic obsession with her search for her on a daily basis," Greene said. "People have a fascination with her life that, for some people, borders on psychotic."

Greene said that he constantly receives phone calls and message from people who both love and hate Anthony obsessively.

"Getting off probation and having the ability to move around will increase her freedom to concentrate on other things, including moving forward and figuring out what happens next as well as what happened in the past," he said. "She's looking forward to being out from probation and having the freedom to handle things in her life and move forward, but her plans are confidential."

Greene would not comment on whether Anthony has considered leaving the country or on the status of her troubled relationship with her parents.

"This is not a celebration," he said. "We're not making this a celebratory time in her life. There's a lot of sadness and pain and regret that she has to deal with."

Anthony's former defense attorney Jose Baez told ABC News on Monday that Anthony served her probation in Florida and that she was currently in Florida. He did not know if Anthony planned to remain in Florida after her probation ends.

But Anthony's legal woes are not over yet.

Zenaida Fernandez-Gonzalez is suing Anthony for using her name when she told Orlando police that her 2-year-old daughter Caylee was stolen by a babysitter and gave police her name. Anthony stuck to that lie for three years before her lawyer told the court at the opening of her murder trial that the babysitter never existed and that Caylee accidentally drowned in the family pool.

Casey Anthony to Be Free as Probation Ends

Fernandez-Gonzalez sued Anthony for defamation, saying that she lost her job and home as a result of the accusations. The trial for the civil suit is scheduled to take place in January 2013.

Matt Morgan, one of the attorneys for Fernandez-Gonzalez, said that the end of Anthony's probation does not affect the defamation case in any way.

"We have at this point already obtained service on Casey Anthony and therefore she will have to attend the trial," Morgan told ABCNews.com. "If she were to leave the state and go outside of the jurisdiction, come January she'd have to return and face Zenaida Gonzalez in the courtroom."

Anthony has checked in with probation officers every month for the past year and her monthly reports have been public. Anthony's reports have consistently said that she is unemployed, has not been taking any classes and has not been drinking alcohol or taking drugs.

"It'd be hard to imagine that, at least in the very near future, she could ever have what many of us would consider a normal life," Greene said.

Debt-Tax Relief Goes to Full Senate | bubbleinfo.com

Monday, August 20th, 2012 at 11:49 AM

From NMN:

The Senate Finance Committee approved a bipartisan bill before summer recess that would extend the Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act through 2013.

The debt relief law spares homeowners who receive principal reductions on their mortgages from being hit with federal income taxes on the amounts forgiven. Without it, millions of owners who go through foreclosure or leave their homes following short sales would experience even more financial stress by being taxed on the amount of debt that the lender forgave in the short sale or that was not recovered in the foreclosure sale. The law has provided relief to thousands of people who have debt balances written off as part of loan-modification agreements is set to expire at the end of December 2012.

The bill now moves to the full Senate for possible action next month, also would extend tax write-offs for mortgage insurance premiums for 2012 and through 2013, and continue some energy-efficiency tax credits for remodelings and new home construction.

The mortgage debt relief extension affect millions of families who are underwater on their loans, delinquent on their payments and heading for foreclosure, short sales or deeds-in-lieu of foreclosure settlements. Under the federal tax code, all types of forgiven debt are treated as ordinary income, subject to regular tax rates. When an underwater homeowner who owes $300,000 has $100,000 of that forgiven as part of a modification or other arrangement with the bank, the unpaid $100,000 balance would normally be taxable.

In 2007 the Mortgage Debt Relief Act agreed to temporarily exempt certain mortgage balances that are forgiven by lenders. The limit is $2 million in debt cancellation for married individuals filing jointly, $1 million for single filers. This special exemption, however, came with a time restriction. The current deadline is Dec. 31, 2012. Without a formal extension by Congress, starting on Jan. 1 all mortgage balances written off by banks would be fully taxable.

There are five bills in Congress, so hopefully one of them will make it through for the homeowner.

Vick shaken up, Eagles top Patriots 27-17

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) ? Michael Vick walked slowly off the field, shaken up for the second straight game. And he was eager to get back in the action.

Philadelphia's star quarterback was leveled on just his sixth play of the Eagles' 27-17 preseason win over the New England Patriots on Monday night. X-rays on his ribs were negative, but he was held out as a precaution.

"He's sore," Eagles coach Andy Reid said. "He was trying to talk me into going back in, so how sore is sore?"

Vick was knocked down by linebacker Jermaine Cunningham after heaving a long pass in the first quarter. Eleven days earlier, in a 24-23 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, he had X-rays on his left thumb ? also negative ? after hitting it on the helmet of center Jason Kelce. Vick took part in only six plays in that game, too.

"Mike's tough," Eagles running back LeSean McCoy said. "I kind of figured it would be all right, even though he took kind of a big blow."

On Monday night, Nick Foles replaced Vick and threw two touchdown passes for the second straight game for the Eagles (No. 8 in the AP Pro32).

"I didn't give any speech or anything" when he joined his teammates in the huddle, Foles said. "I was ready to play and they were, too. I could look in their eyes and see the confidence."

Tom Brady sat out the game for the Patriots (No. 2). The New England quarterback figures to play Friday night in the team's third preseason game, at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Other healthy starters, including wide receivers Wes Welker and Brandon Lloyd, tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez, defensive lineman Vince Wilfork and linebacker Jerod Mayo, were held out of the game.

The Eagles (2-0) also have a quick turnaround between games. Vick had been expected to play at least a half on Monday night and possibly rest on Friday night when Philadelphia faces the Cleveland Browns, also the Eagles' opponent in the regular-season opener.

But his night was cut short, and he left after going 1 for 3 for 5 yards with one run for another 5 yards. After Cunningham drove his helmet into Vick's left side, the quarterback went down, got up slowly then knelt on one knee. He was checked by medical personnel before going to the sideline under his own power.

"That is just football," Cunningham said, "going out there and getting the person with the ball."

Foles, a rookie third-round draft pick from Arizona, came in and finished 18 for 28 for 217 yards and touchdown passes to Clay Harbor of 1 and 3 yards.

"He did a great job," McCoy said. "In the huddle he demanded respect. He put everybody in the right places at the right times."

McCoy scored on a 1-yard run, and Alex Henery kicked a 42-yard field goal to give the Eagles a 24-17 lead with 33 seconds left in the third quarter. He added a 21-yarder that capped the scoring with 2:00 remaining.

For the Patriots (1-1), third-stringer Ryan Mallett completed 10 of 20 passes for 105 yards, including a 7-yard scoring pass to Alex Silvestro. Brian Hoyer was just 5 for 17 for 55 yards.

"Ryan's a very confident player, both him and Brian," wide receiver Deion Branch said, "but it's hard for them because they have to play behind Tom Brady."

Stephen Gostkowski kicked field goals of 51, 35 and 55 yards for the Patriots, who have scored only two preseason touchdowns.

Vick's departure didn't change much for the Patriots despite his scrambling ability, defensive end Chandler Jones said.

"It's the same offensive scheme they're running," he said.

Vick wasn't the only first-stringer knocked out of the game. Philadelphia cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and New England safety Patrick Chung went out in the first half with shoulder injuries. Mike Kafka, Vick's backup last year, missed the game with a hand injury.

The Patriots led 11-0 after Silvestro's touchdown 1:16 into the second quarter and a two-point conversion run by Shane Vereen. Then two lost fumbles within a span of six plays led to two Eagles touchdowns.

Rookie Brandon Bolden muffed a punt, and McCoy scored three plays later. On the Patriots' second play after that, Hoyer fumbled when he was sacked by Phillip Hunt, and Darryl Tapp recovered at the New England 12. Foles hit DeSean Jackson for an 11-yard completion on the next play before connecting with Harbor.

The Eagles took the lead for good, 21-14, with 3:58 gone in the third quarter on Harbor's second touchdown.

Notes: A moment of silence was held before the game for Garrett Reid. The son of Philadelphia coach Andy Reid was found dead Aug. 5 in his dorm room at Lehigh University where he was helping the team's strength and conditioning coach during training camp. ... Four Olympic medalists with New England connections were introduced before the game ? gymnast Aly Raisman of Needham, Mass., swimmer Elizabeth Beisel of Saunderstown, R.I., judo player Kayla Harrison of Marblehead, Mass., and basketball player Maya Moore, who played at the University of Connecticut. ... Andy Reid and defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins had a brief confrontation on the sideline in the first half. "He comes at you. He wants to get the best out of you," Jenkins said. "Obviously, that's not the way I should have handled it, but you just get emotional."

AYISE trains youths in business management skills | Malawi news ...

By Evelyn Chibwe, Nyasa Times

The Active Youth Initiative for Social Enhancement (AYISE), a local non-governmental organization, recently implemented a training programme for 46 youths drawn from Mulanje district in line with the Government of Malawi?s Prevention, Protection, Withdrawal and Rehabilitation of Working Children through Education and Vocation Skills Training project.

The US Department of Labour (USDoL) supports the International Labour Organization (ILO) Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC) to finance implementation of project under the Government of Malawi National Action Plan (NAP). This project is being implemented in Kasungu, Lilongwe Mulanje and Mzimba.

According to Christopher Misuku, AYISE Project Manager, the Prevention, Protection, Withdrawal and Rehabilitation of Working Children through Education and Vocation Skills Training project intends to build the capacity of the structures both at district and community levels to effectively address child labour and related challenges to create a child labour free zone in the areas the project is being implemented and later at district level.

DC Nguluwe speaks to the participants

?The project is supporting children who are removed and prevented from child labour by supporting them to attain formal education through mainstreaming and direct support to those already in the system.

?The support has increased enrolment thereby increasing pressure, making it difficult for primary schools to adequately deal with existing and emerging challenges,? Misuku told Nyasa Times in an interview.

He said in Mulanje, the project is being implemented by Active Youth AYISE, which is working in the area of Senior Chief Nthiramanja focusing on four village headmen, Chonde, Nthiramanja, Kululira and Abunu.

According to the Project Manager, the training programme had targeted youths who had successfully completed a six-month vocational skills training. These youths are to put into practice what they had learnt and that among others they will have to venture into their own businesses thus the training programme, according to Misuku.

?They were trained on how they could run businesses including building their capacity to remain sustainable. The business management training is therefore a tool to prepare them for the various challenges they might face out there,? said Misuku.

He said in total, 52 people were trained, 21 girls, 25 boys, two Group Village Headwomen, and four members of the Community Child Labour Committee that plays a monitoring role overseers of the business that these youths will be conducting at the Service Outlet Centre (a place where the services will be offered).

?They will also ensure that there is sustainability of the project. It is expected that these youths will indirectly support their siblings to attend primary education thereby preventing child labour,? he said.

District Commissioner (DC) for Mulanje, Jack Nguluwe urged on the participants to fully utilize both the knowledge and skills attained in various trades to produce and provide quality products and services.

He said the District Assembly can make a deliberate decision to buy products and services from the youths provided quality is ensured.

?We have the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and Local Development Fund (LDF) Projects. With approval of the procurement committee, we can buy from you in the implementation of these projects as a way of supporting you to succeed in busisnes but that would only happen if your products and services are of high quality,? the DC emphasized.

He thanked AYISE for its ?noble work? in the district, which he described as ?very visible, whose fruits everyone can see?. He said some NGOs ?only talk on the radio and produce excellent reports ?when there is no real work on the ground?.

He also commended the donors of the project should also be commended for supporting such a good initiative, saying it would be important if the project could be extended for another year and in all T/As in the district.

The project was worth MK30 million and started in May 2011. It ends in October. According to Misuku, there are high probabilities of extension subject to an ILO team that visits the country in September.

Investing in Real Estate :Four Steps to the Perfect Ad (Step 4) | Real ...

Posted on August 14th, 2012 admin

Article Summary:

Real Estate Investing Blog helps investors learn about real estate news, tips, how to landlord, tenants, flipping properties, wholesaling, buying, selling commercial residential.STEP FOUR: MONITOR YOUR RESULTS

You may very well have the best advertising campaign ever, but if you can?t measure your results, you would never know. But what if you could actually know exactly where every single customer came from? And what if you knew the cost of each lead

Article Content:

In our three previous steps, we discussed knowing the purpose and audience of your advertising, then we moved on to actually crafting the advertising message. ?That brings us to the fourth and final step in creating the perfect advertisement: ?monitoring your results.

Step Four: Monitor Your Results
You may very well have the best advertising campaign ever, but if you can?t measure your results, you would never know.? But what if you could actually know exactly where every single customer came from? ?And what if you knew the cost of each lead from each individual source?

Better yet, what if you could precisely measure the effectiveness of each ad ? of each subtle variation ? and then compare and test one version against another until you had refined your ad to perfection? ?I have great news: You can!

Today, by using a few simple and yet powerful tools you can do all of that. ?You can have the hard information you need to keep from wasting a large part of your advertising budget. ?When it comes to tracking your advertising, there are only three things you need to be concerned with: how many views your ad received, how many responses to those views, and the conversion rate. ??Let?s take a look at each of these in more depth.

Number of Views. ?The best ad in the world is useless if it is never viewed. ?On the other hand, a lot of views directed at a poor ad will also have limited results. Think of the Naked Cowboy in Time Square. ?How famous would he be if he were standing on a street corner in La Luz, New Mexico? ?Advertising is the same way.

You might have the best advertising message in the world, but if nobody sees it you are out of business. ?But if you craft the right message, designed to make a strong value proposition to your target market (think of the previous steps we?ve covered) and then get that message to be seen by enough of your target market, your results will be great. ?And knowing the number of views your ad receives tells you a lot about where you are advertising.

Number of Responses. ?If you you have plenty of traffic, and you have a well-crafted ad that speaks to your target audience, you will get a high number of responses to the ad. ?This is critical to having a successful advertising campaign. ?On the other hand, if you have lots of views and not many responses (people clicking on your ad) you have a messaging problem.

The problem might be a poor value proposition, or it might be a great value proposition but targeted at the wrong audience. ?Either way, if only a few visitors click on your ad or your click-through rate (CTR) is low, it really doesn?t help you. ?How many people respond to your message tells you a lot about the message itself and allows you to continue to tweak your message until you get it dialed in.? Once you have refined your message, there remains only one step to ensuring a good return on your advertising investment.

Conversion Rate. ?Let?s assume you?ve chosen a good location to place your ad so it is receiving lots of views. ?Let?s also assume that because you have carefully crafted and tweaked your message, ?the target audience likes it and your ad?s click-through rate is high. ?So far, so good. ?All that remains is capturing the leads. ? But how can you determine or measure how well you?re doing at capturing those visitors?

If you divide your total number of leads received by the number of responses to your advertisement, you have your conversion rate or capture rate (CR). ?This is probably the most important measurement of all website metrics because it gauges the effectiveness of your website. ?It is possible to have lots of responses but if you fail to capture them, you are still nowhere. ?And that is where most real estate agents are today.

Let me give you an example.? I was just starting to post this article when I received the following email from a really top-notch agent in my blog community:

Haven?t given you an update lately. I?m still running Craigslist ads, had nearly 19,000 hits on my website in June with 2,500 unique visitors and 130 leads registering. Working to build my team of buyer specialists to handle lead conversion. I?m spread too thin and can only manage to work with a fraction of the leads.
?
The Keller Williams eEdge program in conjunction with Market Leader is virtually a no-cost program for me, otherwise I would be working with you on this. My Real Estate Doctor brand is getting a lot of traction in the area as well.
?
You?re amazing. Keep up the good work.
?
John C. ? Kansas City

Here was my response to John:

Thanks for your kind words. ?I used Market Leader years ago and know a lot of their staff (those who have been around the longest). ?I actually spoke at their annual conference in 2003 in Orlando before they went public.

I would still recommend using the basic LCM gateway. ?Here?s why: ?Based on your numbers your conversion rate (CR) is less than 1% (pretty typical for real estate websites). ?Our Craigslist advertising is running (by ad):

So instead of 130 leads (which is awesome) you?d be looking at nearly 500 for the same effort.? Seems like a no-brainer that you could justify a day for an additional 12 leads a day.? Just sayin?

As always, it is great to hear from you.? Love your approach to the business.

Matt

I hadn?t planned on including an example, but when one came in that was such a clear case, I really felt it would be helpful to share it.? And John?s case is very typical.? John is doing great, even without my LCM technology, because he has been actively following much of my training for over a year.? But imagine what a better capture rate would do for him, all other things being equal.

Real estate websites, just like John?s, are notoriously poor at conversion or ?lead capture?. ?Why? ?Because they are not designed to capture customers but rather to dispense information. ?They do a great job at giving out information, but on average capture less than 1% of the responses. ?In fact, the latest number from the National Association of Realtors? pins that average conversion rate at only 0.87%. ?Less than 1% ? John?s was 5.2%.

That means that if you are using a typical real estate website you need 115 responses to capture a single lead. ?Even the very best and most expensive websites capture only 6-8% of respondents meaning that you will need 13-17 responses just to capture one lead. ?As you can see, the capture rate is very critical. ?The better the capture rate, the more customers you will have, all other things being equal.

But how will you know your conversion rate? ?Your website should allow you to track where your various ads are coming from. ?If it doesn?t, you have the wrong website. ?Our solution to this problem was to design a stand-alone lead capture module (LCM) that focuses on one thing: efficient lead capture.

Our ?LCM Gateway captures as much as 25-35% of all responses or between one fourth and one third of all those who click on your advertising message. ?That?s huge! ?And by using LCM technology, it?s also possible to see exactly where each lead came from. ?For example, you could have different ads running in the Google search network, the Yahoo! network, and Craigslist all at the same time.

In a given week you might receive 12 leads from Google, 9 from Yahoo and 10 from Craigslist, and instantly be able to identify the source of each lead, the conversion rate, and most importantly, the cost of lead. ?How cool is that?

For example, if you divide the total number of leads from each source by the number of ad responses you had from that source you have the conversion rate for that source. ?For example, if you had 12 leads from your Google ad, and you 40 people click on that ad, you would have a conversion rate of 30%. ?(12 / 40 = .3 or 30%)

You may have invested a total of in Google advertising to receive those 12 leads and you could then calculate that your leads were costing you .67 each. ?( / 12 = .67) ?In other words, having the right tool not only helps you do a better job of capturing leads but it also guides you as you try to decide which advertising ideas to spend your money on.

Tracking your advertising may seem difficult at first, particularly if you don?t have the right tools to track it properly. ?But after you begin to track your ad results, it will become second nature and you will always know what works and what doesn?t. ?Remember, it?s not how much money you make, but how much you keep that?s important.

Final thoughts. ?I would like to challenge you to take a look at your current marketing ? all of it. ?Now I want you to ask yourself a few honest questions: Does each advertising idea you are pursuing have a specific purpose and if so, what is that purpose? ?Who are you trying to attract with your advertising? ?What is the demographic of your ideal customer? ?What are their hot buttons? ?Needs and wants?

Does each advertising message have a very definite value proposition that is in alignment with the purpose and customer you?ve chosen? ?Is it simple and clear and tied directly to the needs and wants of your ideal customer? ?Do you have the tools in place to track your results for each of your advertising ideas? ?If not, why not?

Finally, I?d like to invite you to check out our LCM Success system. ?It will give you the tools you need to effectively capture customers, and organize your follow-up both on your computer and on your mobile devices. ?More importantly, my coaching staff and I are dedicated to staying with you, holding your hand, while you learn how to implement these tools and training into your own business.

I Hate Technology!
Do you ever get the idea that an entire cottage industry exists for the sole purpose of fleecing agents out of their hard-earned commission dollars? Ever feel like a new technology company springs up every 15 minutes with the latest, greatest new clever idea? And all the pitches are the same: a room full of drones on phones, calling agents from the NAR membership list, promising great success! Read more >>
