Cat Alarm Clock: So Cute, So Annoying

Boo the orange cat has apparently figured out a foolproof way to alleviate boredom and get his human caretakers the heck out of bed in the morning.

Reaching one paw under the bedroom door, he flicks the door stop - which is somehow on the door and not the wall, like every other house in modern civilization, but that's neither here nor there - incessantly to wake everyone up.

Two main takeaways here:

  1. Their alarm clock is cuter than yours at least.
  2. Cats don't have owners. They have staff.

Google TV's TV and Movies app gets to know you better with ratings, favorites and more

Image

At the center of the revamped Google TV experience that rolled out last fall is its TV & Movies app, which is a blended guide of content currently airing live on TV and available for streaming from the popular internet services (Netflix, Amazon, HBO Go). As Product Manager Rishi Chandra mentioned when we caught up with him at CES, personalization is something Google will be focusing on going forward and that's shown in the updated app being pushed out today. When it's first opened, users will login and be asked to rate a few movies and shows so it can get a sense of their tastes to know what to present, Netflix-style. There's more information displayed up front too, with expanded descriptions, and details below each show so viewers can find out about the episode that's on more easily. For a few more details on what's new and refreshed, check after the break.

Iggy Azalea 'Restructured' Deal For Grand Hustle

After signing with Interscope, rapper tells MTV News, she decided she wants T.I.'s label to be 'a permanent fixture in my career.'

Iggy Azalea's fall 2011 mixtape, Ignorant Art, drew so much attention that by January she'd already inked a deal with Interscope Records. A month later, however, T.I. announced that she had also signed to Grand Hustle Records, causing a bit of confusion. Although it was an usual situation, Azalea says her deal was restructured to create an ideal contract.

"I didn't know I was gonna sign to Grand Hustle," Azalea told MTV News, explaining how she managed to stick with both imprints. "There's no way I thought that would happen. Not because I didn't like them, just because my deal was all sewn up, and I restructured the whole thing."

The 21-year-old Australian rapper revealed that Interscope chairman Jimmy Iovine was "cool with it," helping her tailor a new deal that pleased all parties involved. "[Jimmy] likes Tip, and they're good friends, so it worked out," she explained. "But it made everybody so confused, because everyone was like, 'I thought she was signed to Interscope; Grand Hustle is with Atlantic.' "

Iggy said she pushed for the deal to be amended because she had such natural chemistry with the Atlanta rapper and his team. "I love everyone at Grand Hustle — not just [T.I.]," she shared. "Initially, I wanted to work with him ... because of him, but once I got to Atlanta and I met all of them, I was like, 'Man, I feel so comfortable with all these people and I really want them to all be involved and not just for one album but for the long run.'

"You always hear stories of labels trying to break things up and things changing, and I just wanted to make sure I had a structured business deal where that was not able to happen," she concluded. "So that's why I asked for it to be restructured and for Grand Hustle to be involved and be a permanent fixture in my career."

Iggy Azalea's debut album, The New Classic, is tentatively scheduled to drop this summer.

On Wednesday (April 18), annual EDM boat party Groove Cruise revealed exclusively to MTV News that the 2013 event will take place January 25-28 and launch from Miami. Fans will party their way to Great Stirrup Cay, in the Bahamas, for two days, before doing it all over again on the journey back.

To commemorate the occasion, Groove Cruise has been kind enough to give fans a taste of what they can expect come next year. The Cruise's 2012 video is set to Fedde Le Grand's remix of "Paradise" and features everything one could possibly dream up for an EDM party to the islands: sweeping panoramic shots of the parties aboard Norwegian Cruise Line's vessel and of Great Stirrup Cay. Bevy upon bevy of bikini-clad beauties and raucous revelers rock to epic sets by Thomas Gold, Roger Sanchez, Funkagenda, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and Chris Lake, among others.

For eight years, Groove Cruise, put on by Whet Travel, has taken EDM enthusiasts on a nautical party. Last year, the 2,200-person, 72-hr party visited Norwegian Cruise Line's private island Great Stirrup Cay and Nassau, with more than 40 artists performing. Big names like deadmau5, Benny Benassi, Dirty South and Max Vangeli have all taken to GC's many stages over the years. In 2013, fans will spend both island days at Great Stirrup Cay.

Pre-bookings for the event sold out before Wednesday's date announcement, and Whet Travel has revealed that 70 percent of the 2,300 available tickets have been sold. Bookings will be open to the public come May 2 at TheGrooveCruise.com, and fans can expect the first wave of talent announcements to come in May or June. 96% The Kid with a Bike

All Critics (92) | Top Critics (25) | Fresh (88) | Rotten (4)

"The Kid With a Bike" vibrates with desperation, frustration and the simple unfairness of life, leavened with glimpses of hope.

Cyril is one of the most inspiringly resilient, self-aware young characters to arrive on-screen in recent memory...

"The Kid With A Bike'' is, remarkably, about hope - about the connections people forge when the ones they've been given desert them.

The Dardennes' quiet, naturalistic style strips this story of melodrama but not of emotion.

Without diminishing the boy's intensity or making him in any way ingratiating, the Dardennes take us into his mind, and we begin to appreciate not only his predicament but his resiliency.

The Dardennes' latest is one of their best, a memorable cinematic portrait of troubled youth and soul-saving charity.

Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne offer another in their remarkable succession of contemporary neo-realist dramas in this quietly devastating but gently hopeful [film].

[It] gives obvious homage to a variety of films. ... But one inspiration shines throughout the movie ... The Red Balloon.

...the film delivers a final act as riveting as it is artistically satisfying. Not many films can claim a perfect ending. This one can.

...manages to balance a spiritual sense of grace with the earthy eye of a here-and-now realist.

Hunched over the handlebars, the boy's body seems to carve a hole in the wind. And we watch as this unhappy, rejected child makes some terrible choices, some of which make us want to look away.

One of the classic international works about juvenile delinquency.

If the film doesn't sizzle as heatedly as the Dardennes' more celebrated works, it's nevertheless infused with the compassion and care that they seem always to bring to bear on any subject.

Emotionally restrained yet compassionate, coming-of-age morality tale

The ending is somewhat contrived and forced, but not false, and there's a moving moment when Cyril and Samantha, riding beside a canal one sunny day, exchange bicycles.

[The Dardennes'] latest threads back to previous works in intriguing and satisfying ways...

To their credit, the Dardennes portray their subjects with a minimum of sentimentality.

It seems like a fairly minor movie, although one with major emotional pull.

Remains an effective picture with a genuine feel for human behavior, unearthing a direct sense of disturbance and a few select moments of stunning psychological clarity.

A film of rosy optimism it features a beguiling performance from screen newcomer doret who achieves a wonderfully natural, touching chemistry with de France.

Beyond Samantha's hard-to-fathom loyalty, many of the plot twists are predictable and contrived.

Breaking down the top NFL trade targets

The NFL draft breeds player movement. And not just in terms of rookie picks.

Player personnel executives around the league are currently tweaking rosters to be as least position-needy as possible entering the draft. That way, clubs set themselves up to select the "best players available." By May 1, rosters must be readied for the heart of OTA season.

Veteran player trades were disallowed leading up to and during last year's lockout-affected draft, but in 2010 we saw a whopping 18 trades in the month of April. 24 vets were involved, including Donovan McNabb, Brandon Marshall, Santonio Holmes, Leon Washington, Ted Ginn, Tony Scheffler, and Jason Campbell.

April is the most trade-happy month on the NFL calendar.

Here's an in-depth look at ten pre-draft trade candidates, with some more listed at the end.

1. Bears running back Matt Forte

Forte has done his best to make the organization look bad in repeated ESPN appearances, complaining about his contract status. He was particularly displeased with the Bears' signing of Michael Bush, even though shared rushing attempts could actually work to prolong Forte's career.

Forte is a good back. New GM Phil Emery knows it, or else he wouldn't have slapped Forte with the franchise tag. But the Bears now have a starting-caliber replacement, and can find another on day two of the draft. On the trade market, Forte could fetch a second-round pick and then some.

Prediction: Traded to New England for second- and sixth-round picks.

2. Eagles cornerback Asante Samuel

Samuel is still playing at a very high level, but he no longer fits the Eagles' defensive philosophy. He'll also be difficult to trade going on age 31 with a $9.9 million base salary. In all likelihood, Samuel will have to agree to a reworked contract in order to expedite his way out of Philadelphia.

The Lions nearly traded for Samuel late last summer, offering two second-day draft picks in a deal Eagles GM Howie Roseman nixed at the last minute. Detroit is in no better shape at corner than it was at this time last year. It's pretty safe to assume the sides will rekindle talks before the draft.

Prediction: Traded to Detroit for a conditional fourth-round pick.

3. Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney

Freeney has been unwilling to move from end to outside linebacker in new coach Chuck Pagano's 3-4 scheme. The Colts figured that out early, and began "fielding calls" in February to gauge interest around the league. Due to Freeney's age (32) and exorbitant salary ($14M), they found no takers.

GM Ryan Grigson was adamant at this week's Owners Meetings that Freeney is now part of the team's 2012 plans. "He's a Colt. Period," Grigson said. That could change quickly, of course, if a team believes it's one pass rusher away from a Super Bowl. Like Samuel, Freeney would have to redo his deal in order to make a trade work. The Colts do have plenty of cap space to keep him.

Prediction: Stays with Indianapolis.

4. Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart

Carolina's combined $52 million investments in DeAngelo Williams and Mike Tolbert don't make Stewart the odd man out, per se, but they certainly raise the question of whether Stewart will be a Panther beyond 2013. (He may not make it that long.) Stewart's rookie contract is up after this season, and Carolina isn't going to be able to keep paying all three backs. With Stewart coming off an impressive year (career-high 5.36 YPC, 47 catches) it's time to strike while the iron is hot.

Though he's in a contract season, an acquiring team won't have to commit top dollar to Stewart because it can slap him with the franchise tag in 2013. Based on 2012 tender numbers, a team could get Stewart's age-25 and 26 seasons for what essentially amounts to a two-year, $9.053 million commitment. As a premium talent, Stewart is well worth that money in a keep-and-tag scenario.

Prediction: Traded to Denver for a second-round pick.

As a premium talent, Stewart is well worth that money in a keep-and-tag scenario.

Prediction: Traded to Denver for a second-round pick.

5. Titans quarterback Matt Hasselbeck

The Titans know they can do better than the fading Hasselbeck, who in the latter stages of 2011 more closely resembled a late-career Mark Brunell than his three-time Pro Bowl old self. Tennessee swung and missed on Peyton Manning, but the organization clearly wants more at quarterback.

If the Titans are smart, they'll know 2011 first-round pick Jake Locker is ready to start and will run circles around Hasselbeck in training camp. The club remains high on Rusty Smith as a potential long-term backup. Clearing Hasselbeck's $5.5 million salary off the books wouldn't hurt, either. A phone call to old Hasselbeck pal Mike Holmgren in Cleveland may be all it takes to turn the page.

Prediction: Traded to Cleveland for a fifth-round pick.

6. Bengals linebacker Keith Rivers

The ninth pick in the 2008 draft, Rivers has been a testament to the increasingly popular notion that non-rush linebackers shouldn't be drafted so high. Rivers is a fine run defender, but he hasn't come close to living up to his draft status. He also missed all of last season with a wrist condition.

The medical will be key because Rivers recovered far more slowly than anticipated, and the wrist injury has been called "degenerative." Rivers is in a contract season, however, and the Bengals probably won't be signing him long term. He's not even projected for the starting lineup this year.

UPDATE: Rivers has been traded to the Giants for a fifth-round pick.

7. Patriots quarterbacks Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett

Hoyer lacks arm strength, and Mallett is short on mobility. At ages 26 and 24, however, they are tantalizing young prospects after learning under Tom Brady. Neither has a particularly prohibitive base salary. Hoyer draws high marks for intangible traits, and Mallett can sling it a country mile.

Teams likely still view Hoyer's talent as unremarkable, and will wait until he hits the 2013 market before overspending. Mallett is the more intriguing trade target, though the Patriots probably won't part with him for less than a second-round pick after Mallett cost them a third-rounder in 2011.

Prediction: Both stay in New England.

8. Texans running back Ben Tate

Tate is a logical trade candidate in that the player ahead of him on the depth chart just re-signed for $43 million over five seasons, and Houston's zone-blocking scheme can render running back a replaceable position. Tate is a beastly tackle breaker with underrated skills in the passing game. He's cheap and not yet 24, and those characteristics make Tate very enticing on the trade market.

They may bite if an unrefusable offer comes along, but the Texans' best option is to keep Tate for one more season. He's low-cost, starter-quality talent in one of the NFL's run-heaviest offenses. The club should be more amenable to trade offers next offseason, when Tate enters a contract year.

Prediction: Stays in Houston.

9. Jets linebacker Bart Scott

New York Newsday reported in early January that Scott would not be back with the Jets, and the team granted him permission to seek a trade just before February's Scouting Combine. It's not difficult to see why they've found no takers, however. Scott is a two-down inside linebacker going on age 32. His $4.2 million salary is both hefty and fully guaranteed for the 2012 season.

Coach Rex Ryan now claims the Jets plan to keep Scott, but that could be an issue either of Ryan lacking foresight, or a leverage play by the organization. Teams will have interest in Scott if he's released. They just aren't going to take on his contract. The Jets have a tough decision ahead.

Prediction: Released after the draft.

10. Bills cornerback Leodis McKelvin

McKelvin was the 11th pick in the 2008 draft, so he's a holdover from an old Bills regime. And McKelvin hasn't played remotely well enough to earn a spot in GM Buddy Nix and coach Chan Gailey's long-term plans. McKelvin is entering the final year on his rookie deal. He's not getting an extension and won't be a 2012 starter, so it makes the most sense for Buffalo to move him now.

McKelvin still has talent and youth (26) on his side. Dick Jauron was Bills coach when McKelvin was drafted, and now runs the defense in Cleveland. A move like this could make the Browns more comfortable bypassing Morris Claiborne in favor of offense at the No. 4 pick. The Browns have 13 draft choices after compensatory picks were distributed, so they'll be open to wheeling and dealing. McKelvin is a right corner by nature, and a logical fit opposite LCB Joe Haden.

Prediction: Traded to Cleveland for a sixth-round pick.

More Trade Candidates: Giants DE Osi Umenyiora, Bucs TE Kellen Winslow, Chiefs DL Glenn Dorsey, Rams WR Danny Amendola, Raiders WR Louis Murphy, Broncos RB Knowshon Moreno, Eagles DE Darryl Tapp, Lions DT Sammie Lee Hill, Panthers QB Jimmy Clausen, Saints RB Chris Ivory, Dolphins DE Phillip Merling, Browns WR Mohamed Massaquoi, Colts DE Jerry Hughes, Lions CB Alphonso Smith, Panthers RB Mike Goodson, Titans LB Gerald McRath, Dolphins LB Koa Misi, Patriots DT Ron Brace, Jets RT Wayne Hunter, Bengals DE Robert Geathers, Bucs WR Arrelious Benn, Texans SS Glover Quin, Seahawks WR Deon Butler.

Quakes Caused By Waste From Gas Wells, Study Finds

A water truck heads up Colorado Road 215 along Parachute Creek. Water is key to extracting natural gas from deep underground. David Gilkey/NPR

A water truck heads up Colorado Road 215 along Parachute Creek. Water is key to extracting natural gas from deep underground.

The U.S. Geological Survey will soon confirm that the oil and gas industry is creating earthquakes, and new data from the Midwest finds that these man-made quakes are happening more often than originally thought.

Man-Made Earthquakes?

On Sept. 12, 2008, a new wastewater well, Trigg Well No. 1, opened for business in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Wastewater gets pumped deep underground, about 2.6 miles below the surface. Later that same year, seismologists noticed a series of small but significant earthquakes around the same region. The quakes were rare for the area, and they were centered near the well and at about the same depth underground. The scientists concluded that the injection of wastewater had likely triggered the temblors.

Earthquakes happen when faults in the Earth slip and slide against each other. There's continuous stress on innumerable faults on our continent, but seismologists like Bill Ellsworth, from the U.S. Geological Survey, started seeing something odd about 12 years ago.

"One thing we had begun to notice was that there were an unusual number of earthquakes in the middle of the country," he says, an area not known for quakes. They were small, though ? usually just over magnitude 3. Then, in 2009, the shaking got much more frequent.

"After that time, things really began to take off, and that's what really caught our attention," Ellsworth says. "It is really quite surprising." In 2009 there were 50 quakes a year in the middle part of the continent. There were 87 in 2010 and 134 last year.

This is so unusual that Ellsworth and other seismologists suspected it wasn't natural ? they suspected the oil and gas industry.

Quakes Clustered Around Wastewater Wells

Gas drilling is on the rise around the country, especially hydraulic fracturing. Hydrofracking uses billions of gallons of water a year to crack deep rock and release natural gas. Some have suspected that fracking was causing quakes, but evidence in several parts of the country points to wastewater wells, where companies dump used frack water. Ellsworth thinks his data confirm that.

"We find no evidence that fracking is related to the occurrence of earthquakes that people are feeling. We think that it's more intimately connected to the wastewater disposal," he says.

Ellsworth says most of these new quakes are clustered around places where there are waste wells.

Waste wells have been around for decades. There are tens of thousands of waste wells in the country, but very few quakes.

What's A Wastewater Well?

Hydraulic fracturing relies on high-pressure water and sand to break apart rock and extract natural gas. The wastewater generated by hydrofracking and other types of gas drilling is injected deep underground for long-term storage. Seismologists believe wastewater injection is causing earthquakes in some parts of the country. Waste wells often go deeper than gas drilling wells, down into basement rock, where faults are more common. Scientists think the water may be lubricating faults in the Earth's crust, causing them to slip.

What's changed is that the gas industry is using ? and disposing of ? more water. Waste wells are often deeper than gas drilling wells, down into basement rock where faults are more common.

And while the quakes are small, Ellsworth says they can happen anywhere.

"There are stresses that can produce earthquakes basically everywhere in the crust," he says. "And in most of the regions of the U.S., earthquakes don't happen, because those stresses are not changing. But if we have a way of unlocking them, such as by pumping fluid into an area where there is a pre-existing fault, it's possible that we can trigger earthquakes."

Alternate Causes Of Quakes

These waste wells are filled with water, and seismologist Cliff Frohlich at the University of Texas says that water affects a fault the way air does a puck in an air hockey game.

"The minute you put air on, it floats ? the puck still weighs the same, but there's no friction to keep it from going horizontally," Frohlich says. "The same thing can happen on a fault."

The high water pressure basically separates a fault that has locked in place; the fault moves and creates a quake.

The more scientists study these induced quakes, the more they find. Frohlich has studied a "swarm" of 183 small quakes near Dallas that took place in 2008 and 2009. That's right next to one of the largest oil and gas plays in the country.

Frohlich suspects that it's not just waste wells creating quakes. In some areas, the amount of oil and gas taken out of the earth has changed the local geology. He looked at two quakes near the town of Alice, Texas ? one in 1997, the other in 2010. Since the 1930s, the area has produced 100 million barrels of oil and nearly 3 trillion cubic feet of gas.

"Sometimes quakes [are] caused when you remove things from underground," he says. "There are quakes related to mining ? you are changing the stress field with the material you remove, and that puts stress on a fault and you get an earthquake."

Frohlich notes somewhat reassuringly that so far, man-made quakes have not been any bigger than natural earthquakes in a region.
