An Introduction To Life Coaching Training

The International Coach Federation (ICF) has created a framework for life coaching training, built around four key competencies. Those who aspire to be professional life coaches, who are looking for a foundation based on both experience and education, will find this program useful. As coaches become trained, and potentially certified, they will learn the importance of keeping professional distance, confidentiality, and empathy, in the coach/client relationship.

The core competencies begin with setting the foundation. Setting the foundation means that professional coaches meet ethical guidelines, and professional standards. Also, setting the foundation includes the ability to establish the coaching agreement at the outset, which includes establishing parameters for coaching relationships, and determining which clients will benefit from the coach?s style and techniques.

Another core competency includes co-creating relationships. Coaches should establish both intimacy and trust with their clients, in order to have effective relationships. Also, a coach should exude an effective presence, by being fully present during interactions with clients, choosing effective ways to work with clients in the moment, and demonstrating the ability to deal with strong emotions.

Communicating effectively is another core competency. Active listening is an important component of effective communication, as is powerful questioning. Direct communication, which employs the type of language which will have the greatest positive effect on the client, includes being articulate, using metaphor and analogy effectively, and clearly expressing the purpose for meetings and exercises offered to the client.

Another core competency includes facilitating learning and results. The beginning of a coach?s job is to create awareness, regarding life circumstances, habits, and approaching decisions. Then, the coach assists clients as they design a specific action plan around those decisions, managing the clients? progress, and holding clients responsible for their goals.

Many coaches choose certification. The ICF certifications include Associate Certified Coach, Professional Certified Coach, and Master Certified Coach, in progressive order. Obtaining certification demonstrates a commitment to professional development, and helps to build credibility for coaches. Each level has specific requirements, including examinations, mentor interactions, reference letters, and experience hours.

With the help of life coaches, clients will set their priorities, outline their goals, and determine their action steps. Also, clients will have accountability for their actions, and an objective opinion about their progress. Coaches may choose to work alone, in groups, or as part of services and agencies. By obtaining life coaching training, and even certification, prospective coaches will gain a foundation based on set competencies, and a more thorough understanding of the purpose of their profession.
