Marist's Christopher Leonard was the coxswain on the United States men's eight team which placed fourth in its opening heat at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia.

The Americans got out of the gate poorly and sat in last place throughout the 2,000-meter race, finishing 28 seconds behind winner Poland in 6 minutes, 33.81 seconds. Ukraine was second and Belarus was third.

The Americans are one of five boats in Sunday's repechage, along with Norway, Ukraine, Netherlands and Belarus.
